NWR: About Drinking and Driving (sorry long)

My Best Friends sister was killed 6 years ago at the age of 19 in a drunk driving accident...she was a passenger in the car.

Since last year my frined decided she wanted to do something in her name...out High School has a scholarship in her name but my friend wanted more...so we put together a Foundation...Melissa's Rainbow of Joy. Last November was the 1st benefit and we did so good...We had people there from MADD and Kathleen Rice...we raised about 10k...and donations were made to the High School for the scholarship and to MADD...I think one more place but I forgot...What we do to raise the money is sell raffle tickets 50/50...and we make up baskets with stuff we get donated and then the guests are able to by tickets and put it in the basket they want and at the end of the day we pick the winner. We have about 25 baskets, ranging from perfume, restaurants gift certificates, hair salons, spas, gyms, books (adult and children), cosmetics, wine, and my favorite a wedding cake fromt he Oekha castle!!!! I hope i win that this year...

Well anyway the point of me writing this to you is that this is open to anyone to come...to make donations...it could be something to put into a basket or a monetary donation...anything helps...the admission fee is $55...its being held at HARBOR LINKS, Port Washington on Nov 11th. You get brunch, there is a dj, and for kids there is face painting and a magic show...this year the president of MADD is going to be there...Kathleen Rice and Kate Murray...so it should be very interesting...

The more $ we raise hopefully the DD will come down!!!

If anyone wants more information on it I have a brochure i would be more the happy to type out for you or mail to you!!!

This means alot to all of us!! Melissa was the best!!!

I know how you feel, my best friend was killed my a drunk driver in 2001. We did the same thing with the HS there is a plaque hanging in the hallway for him, we did the MADD 5K walk this year and raised a bunch of money. My mother was almost killed as well and luckily she is here today after months in a coma and years of therapy!
It a wonderful thing you guys are doing keep it up!!!
Please let me know what you need and i will see what i can do!

This is a great cause. I wish you all the best of luck, and I’m so sorry about your friend!

I just found out yesterday that my cousin’s boyfriend’s friend (hows that for a close connection) killed someone while drunk driving. I was so shocked and saddened—and angry that people insist on driving when they probably know they’re intoxicated!
