How do you feel about giving or gift certificates money for gifts? Not for a wedding, but for yearly occassions such as Birthdays and Christmas?
I bring this up because when FH and I did our Christmas shopping for our families, I bought my side tangible gifts. FH only wanted to give $$ or gift certificates b/c he said 'What are they going to do with [whatever gift you get them]' Then I started thinking that any gift I ever got my FILs they were thinking, 'Great, more cr ap we don't want/need'. I guess I just feel it's a little selfish b/c I love giving gifts, and I think it's really impersonal to give $$ or a monetary gift to immediate family. JMO Vent over.

Re: NWR: $$$$ and gift certificates
I prefer money over gift certifificates because certifictates restrict ur shopping..but money you can use everywhere . I dont think there is anything wrong with giving either one as presents

My FH is the same way. He wanted to get all of his family gift certificates. I just feel like giving a GC is like saying that you don't feel like taking the time to pick out a gift. Don't get me wrong, there are some people where it's appropriate, like secret santas or co-workers, but I think close family should always get gifts. I kind of feel the same way about weddings. When I was in my sister's wedding I made sure to get her a gift. I would have felt strange giving her cash.

Good point. With co-workers and people you arent super close with you can give GC but I guess with family you should probabaly give a present

Re: NWR: $$$$ and gift certificates
i prefer giving a tangible gift, especially for close family and friends. i just feel like an actual gift shows a little more thought & effort. if someone really hates what i pick out they can always return it!

Oh yeah...absolutely I have no problem giving $$ or Gift Certificates to coworkers, extended family, or for occassions such as weddings, baptism, graduation, etc...but to my parents? siblings? I couldn't
