NWR--Any Anatomy Students out there, past or present....
Im trying very hard in my Anatomy Class but I just cant seem to get that 'B' I need. I study like mad. Anyone taking Anatomy have any study habits that seem to help? We are doing Muscles right now. I would need to get high 80's in the next two tests to get my 'B'. Any help would be much appreciated.

it depends on what you need help with more specifically...
do you need help with being able to name and identify structures? do you need help with more conceptual things like function of structures?

Well my lecture test I think is gonna be easier for me because it's really just reading the chapters and understanding it, memorizing it but my lab exams, everytime I think I did exceptionally well I get a lower grade on my exam. This exam in lab coming up next friday is on origin and insertion, and Im lost. The muscles themselves I have pretty much gotten done but how do I remember origin and insertion and I just cant figure out what Im doing wrong as far as study techniques for lecture. I feel I should be doing better.

Do you have the coloring books? That helped me a lot!

Re: NWR--Any Anatomy Students out there, past or present....
ok for lab tests there are some key things to remember:
for origins and insertions it is most important to have a firm grasp on what the function of that muscle is. for instance, the psoas is a primary flexor of the hip, therefore it makes sense that it would originate from the trunks, specifically the lumbar vertebrae, and end at the leg somewhere, which it ends at the lesser trochanter of the femur. this makes sense when you know that it flexes the hip/trunk, especially against gravity. I know this is an easy example, and the muscles get much harder. the best advice i have would be to see pictures of the muscles, once you have seen the pictures and paid careful attention to their origin and insertions, it makes it easier to remember. Do you have a set of flashcards that you can look at quickly? also a review book is a great way to study as you can at least learn the most important and frequently asked structures. nmemonics are great as well. hope this helps please feel free to ask anything else!
good luck!

nmemonic devices always helped me. That class is so tough though.

Thanks for the advice. Where can I get these coloring books? Also not familiar with pneumonics?? So Im better off focusing on the functions which will make it easier to figure out the origin and insertion right? I've heard about flashcards you can pick up at borders but I've been kinda strapped for cash right now so I havent picked them up.

Anatomy is a killer. I found that using Netter's Anatomy Flash Cards helped me a lot. Sometimes it is not convenient to carry Netter's Atlas everywhere, but you can use the flash cards whenever and it's easier to test yourself using the cards. There will be lines pointing to important structures, but without identification - you have to flip to the back to find out what structure it is.
Just to go over the structures repeatedly helped me a lot. Also going back to lab with a group of other students helped.
ETA: I apologize...when I started this post, you hadn't mentioned flash cards yet.

OH god!!! i feel bad for you. i remember A&P ( i am a RN). The coloring book everyone is talking about it he Anatomy Coloring Book and i got mine in Barnes and Nobles or Borders, i can't remember, but i helps. pneumonics are the best. Truthfully, anatomy is ALL memorizing!!!! that's my best advice. Just write down anything yo can and MEMORIZE it!! you will be fine.

That's okay... The Netters flashcards are what they were telling me to pick up at Borders. Someone in my class said they are like $40 right. This is gonna sound so pathetic but I dont have $40 to spare right now. The week after class is over Im sure I'll have it See this is the thing thats killing me is that we had 1/2 a lab on muscles and there was no information given just a chance to look at the models. Now tommorow is the second lab and it's to have each group pick 5 muscles we want to be tested on for a total of 25 muscles. Then next friday is the exam but there are 3 other lab classes that are going on all week long so there is no time for me to get into the lab on my own. Also I was told that I needed to memorize a list of 70muscles anyway along with insertion and origin and function and out of the 70, 25 will be tested on and then there will be questions on the others. All in one week. On the upside I have an 'A' average in Intergrated basic science(Microbiology with out the lab)

I'll FM this to you, just in case you don't check this thread again, but I found this online site I used last year to help out when I couldn't get into lab.
I think it was on a different website when I used it, but now it's on downstate's. You can also make your own quizzes out of the sections you need to focus on, besides going through the motions of an 'online' lab. It was really helpful for me - I'm glad I could find it again. It will come in handy when studying for boards.
Good luck!

I carried around flashcards and made my FH quiz me whenever I saw him. I used the school lab book, which had pictures of all the muscles, to memorize the locations. For me, it was all about repetition.
I know it sounds silly but going to the gym helped me too. I started weight training around the same time I was taking Anatomy and noticed how all the machines at my gym had pictures of the muscle groups it worked out and the names.

Netter Atlas and going over the names over and over and over (like a thousand times ) got me through gross anatomy in med school...until it became second nature.
Goodluck!

Thanks ladies. I went to Borders this afternoon after lab and found the Barrons Flashcards which seem to be just as good as Netters but less expensive. It also happened to come with a poster of the muscles. I think I might have a chance this lab exam.
