FH is an ESL teacher, I just emailed him about it. He works with 1st and 2nd grade this year, but he does after school programs with different ages, so he might have some good ideas. I will let you know (and good luck with the program tomorrow!)

If you tell me the grade level you'll be working with, I may be able to suggest appropriate activities. I've been teaching ESL for 10 years, I can only advice you, each classroom is different, with varying levels of proficiency...as you may learn w/ time and get to know the kids. You must definitely use a lot of visuals, and TPR.

its only a 3 week program and they just want to start off with some simpe activities, then we will be using test prep for the NYSESLAT.
I have 6th, 7th and 8th grade

That's my grade level! I have 7/8th graders....Well the NYSLAT can begin anywhere from Apr. 18 until May 18th. I would suggest for the speaking part, getting clippings from newspapers, magazines, etc...and sit w/ the Beginners, describe what's in the pic, while pointing as you say the words ie: book, boy, dog etc..., and have them retell it to you. Also for intermediates....Ask them a question about the pic and have them retell. I find that the worst part is the writing...luckily they'll have bilingual dictionaries...but you can practice using A LOT of graphic organizers....tell them to first write on them, and use what is on the organizer to re-write their letter, or essay.

I teach high school ESL (grades 9-12). The students are from a ton of different countries/ backgrounds and at different levels with their English skills. FM me if you have any questions or need advice on anything.
