this may be a dumb question, but is it bad for your hair to leave conditioner in for longer than the recommended time?

I hope not, because I almost always do!

no its not. The only thing that is bad about it is that it seems to take longer to wash it out...at least with my hair

Depends on your hair and the product really (though I only play a hair care professional on the internet!)
I actually put conditioner in my hair with my hair under the running water. If I let it sit, it weighs my (pretty fine) hair down all day long. My friends with thicker hair marinate in the conditioner, though, and their hair looks great!
Do what works for you. I doubt your hair will fall out or anything.

No it's not...but it also depends on your hair. If your hair is fine, it will weigh it down.
For the Summer, I actually put in some kind of leave-in conditioner in my hair before I go out to the beach. I then tie it back and just go. Since the Summer is pretty drying on your hair, it's a good way to help combat it.
