you can try the typical - john has 94 cents in two pockets. he has an equal amount in each pocket. how much money does john have in each pocket?

or a videogame costs 13.56, a computer game costs 12.78. if you have a twenty dollar bill and a ten dollar bill can you afford both? if so, how much money will be left over?

is that what u were looking for? try teachers.net

Not sure if this would be good for an intro lesson but you could get a class set of toys r us ads and have each student pick a different amount of money out of a hat. So some students will have ten dollars to spend while others might have 100 dolllars. Allow students to spend all of their money but they are not allowed to go over. They need to write down each toy and the price....add all their items up and figure out how much change they should receive.

One more idea....you could bring in monopoly money and change. Put price tags on different items in the classroom and allow a few students to purchase items and a few to be cashiers.

This is a good idea. You might want to do that as their independent/group work after the lesson. I would even find clip art $$ and make it enlarged. Use magnets or fun tack on the back to stick to the board as HUGE visuals.

Hiya! I did this lesson with a 3rd grade and they LOVEDDD it!
Get this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Pigs-Will-Be-Aladdin-Picture/dp/0689812191/sr=1-1/qid=1160496256/ref=sr_1_1/002-4092727-3139213?ie=UTF8&s=books

Its about a family of pigs who want to go out to dinner but have no money so they scrounge up money in their house (between couch cushions etc.) They finally get to dinner and then they can't go over a certain amount. Its great for money lessons! There is even a menu inside the book which I used to have the kids 'order' their own dinners without going over a certain amount. The book also has lesson ideas included in it! Really great!

Hi,
Did you ever play it with dice?

You play with a partner and the goal is to get to a $1.00 with the least amount if coins.

If I remember it goes like this......You roll a pair of dice and what ever number comes up, lets say 9.....

That student takes out 9 cents of their fake money. Their partner then rolls and does the same thing.

As they keep acquiring change they have to start to 'change their change'. For example: Pennies for a nickel, 2 dimes and a nickel for a quarter...etc.

You can make the game harder by making the goal amount higher or even after a certain time period have then stop and see what they can buy with their money. Have a fake store of a worksheet with items and prices.

Does that make sense???

Any suggestions on K-1 Social Studies lessonsinvolving the community. I need to come up with a creative and easy project. Some of my classes are special ed or real baby like. Still the beginning of the year and they haven't grown out of it!

Thanks

try doing somthing with a menu, like menu math...allow the kids to chose what they want to eat for a specific amount of money and then they can figure out the change./..etc
