sometimes i feel like the only person in the world who doesn't have one. ii live in astoria queens and never had the reason to get one. i can take the train/bus anywhere and my FH drives and has a car so if i ever needed anythiing he could take me - but it never really comes to that.
just curious. i am taking driving lessons and i do have my permit...
anyone want to share any stores? road test stories? stuff like that?

I failed my road test twice before I finally passed. But that is just because I am extra special. lol.

I passed the first time and I learned how to drive in a truck. I have only been in an accident once and thats because some old jerk of a man opened his door into oncoming traffic and his door hit my tire. I didn't even know what was happening when my spun out of control. My hubby took his road test with mee. He admits I am the better driver.

A lot of people fail once because its incredibly nerve wrecking. My dad told me I better pass the first time if I wanted him to buy me a brand new car soo I was like I am soo passing this lol.

I don't have my license either and feel no need to get one. I really don't mind walking or taking the train/bus. I live in Elmhurst and I'm so centrally located that I can walk just about anywhere. I have my permit but mostly for identification purposes.
Though I did tell my sister that if she wanted to take driver's ed classes that I'd go with her and pay for her classes (after the wedding!) and she could consider it a Christmas gift!
ETA: My mom's license expired a few years back and she had to re-take her test. She FAILED the first time and she had already been driving for a good 18 years! It is really nerve wracking and some of those people are just effing miserable and are unreasonably harsh.

I dont have a driver's license and I have never felt the need to get one! I grew up in Manhattan and now I live in Woodside. I spent 4 years in Boston for college and never needed to drive. Sometimes I wish I could drive just so i could do those 'drive across the country'trips but I have plenty of friends who drive. Plus the price of gas is crazy and I can save that money for the wedding! As long as there is a bus or train near by, I can get anywhere! ha

my mom is 54 years old and has never had her license. Shes lived on Long Island her whole life, just never had any desire!
as long as you take lessons you should be fine, they give you all the tips and all that

i failed once before i passed as well, but it wans't my fault. i had gone to the test with my driving school and there were 3 other drivers in the car when i took the test. the instructor was 'new'...so his supervisor was in the car too, and he's the one who failed me! he said he had to meet a quota! i was so upset, but i passed the second time w/ flying colors!
even if you don't need to drive, having a license is always convenient.

I didn't get my license until I was like 21. And that was so I could have some id! I went to HS in manhattan so I never had to...when I went to college everyone was like 'WHAT??? No license??'

LOL I passed and I took my in astoria- same place you took yours. 20th ave and 26 street
Just relax and stay calm- use the parking lot in Astroia Park in the am as practice- that what I did

its not that i don't want to get my license, i'm just scared of taking the test again. the examiner was so mean!
when i took it the first time, i turned into a 4 lane road and she told me to make a right turn. i turned my right blinker on to get into the right lane but there were too many cars coming in that lane so i reduced my speed to get into that lane after the cars drive by. when she saw me do that she was like your in the wrong lane to make a right turn and she told me to make a left and took me back to the starting point. I never even got to park or make a U-turn - nothing!
when i'm sitting there waiting for her to fail me basically, she told me i was going to slow - its was a 30mph zone and i was doing 25, and that when i pulled out of my inital parking space i pulled out to slow - um, really? am i supposed to hit the gas and zoom off? or should i at least check for oncoming traffic! idiot.

I knew how to drive, the adjudicator just made me crazy, panic attack level nervous. I'm a good driver, too!

PS, one of my best friends came to NY for college from Ohio, never got her license in hs and then since she lives in QUeens, she hasn't bothered to get it cause she takes MTA everywhere. No big deal. Just means she never has to be the designated driver when we go out, which means she gets to get lit every time and I don't! No fair!

living on LI ....not having a car is not an option. I grew up on he north shore and trains and buses run every couple of hours and only until a certain time.
My girlfriend is 29 and grew up in queens. she has no license and no sense of direction LOL I envy her lack of car payment/insurance
BUT I LOVE THE FREEDOM my car gives me. I can't imagine not having a car
PLUS on Long island there is more parking, i could never live in queens/manhattan
walking 4 blocks away from my house IS NOT ACCEPTABLE
I'm a spoiled Long Islander :)

I don't have one either. I have lived in Brooklyn and Manhattan all my life and never really needed one. I have a permit and can drive really well but cannot parallel park to save my life. I have actually hit a tree in my brothers new car in an attempt at parking, and FH says once my car goes in reverse, it's like Ray Charles is in the driver's seat. I have been taking driver's ed on and off since i was 16, and scheduled (and chickened out on) the road test 4 times. I think I have some weird thing where I am afraid of failing, even though a lot of people do. I do acknowledge though, that I should get my license before I have children, it's good to have just in case of an emergency. FH said once I pass the road test, he will buy me the laser eye surgery I want but cant afford right now. Bribery totally works for me!

I failed my test twice here on the island. It took me to move to Florida to pass on the first time down there. I think NY should have their test as easy as it was down there up here. No parralle parking woohoo. I didnt get my license until I was 21. I didnt get my own car until I was 24.

i didn't get my license until two summers ago! and the only reason i got my permit was because i needed id to travel for cheerleading my mom doesn't have a license.
i passed on the first time i dont know how! 1. i was noticeably trembling the whole time like my leg was shaking and i couldn't stop it. 2. on the first left i was waiting and waiting until cars were done passing that the lady was like 'you can turn now.' 3. on the parallel park she didnt even open the door to look i wasnt even done and she said okay you can pull out. i thought i failed 4. when she told me to do the three point turn after i was done this man in a truck was waving at us to roll down the window and i didnt know if i should and she told me to and he asked for directions. 5. when the test was over and we were going back to park she said pull in right here and i parked so far away from the curb practiclally in the middle of the street
i think it depends on what mood your person is in i heard right after lunch is the best time they are fed and there day is almost over
OR you could wait until you have a baby bump!! the three people i know that have taking there road test prego passed and did worst than i did i guess they know you need to take you baby to the doc all the time.

meeeee. I have had my permit forever... but not having a license ***** big time during wedding planning. especially when FH is busy on the wknds or doesnt want to do wedding stuff. it seems like all wedding stuff is located in LI. so i have no way to get there. I had to take the LIRR to go to the bridal extravaganza and got home close to 1am. ughhh
I was born and raised in downtown manhattan, noone has a car here.
