NWR: Anyone ever have root canal before?

NWR: Anyone ever have root canal before?

I had one last night. I'm not a happy camper today. It HURTS. Very sore... and when I accidentally bite SLIGHTLY hard on the tooth that was worked on (even though I'm chewing on the other side), I see stars. SUCH pain. Plus I'm not happy that I have to shell out $500 for all this (including the upcoming crown)... I thought it was all covered in my insurance. And the dentist isn't giving me ANY break on my out of pocket (and I went to him because he's the best friend of one of my friends). AND he's on vacation starting Saturday, which I didn't know until AFTER the root canal, so now I feel STUCK if this pain continues, which would last right into Easter.

It supposed to hurt like this... I mean besides the soreness? I'm waiting for a call back from my doctor.

Sorry Sarah!! Feel better! I never had root canal so I cant help- I had wisdom teeth pain and teeth pain is the worst. I am getting mine out on April 18th so I will be in the same boat!! If it doesn't go away within a day, call the dentist back and maybe take some motrin??

The pain should definitely subside in a day or 2. Taking Motrin or Advil is a good idea. That should help with the pain. I've had a few root canals and they are never fun. I always say, in my next life I'm coming back as a dentist!!!

You're right! I think I'm just surprised because my last dentist only took what my insurance paid, and waived the out-of-pocket, so I was just surprised this guy wouldn't do anything close to that... not even a discount. Getting hit with the charge ALMOST hurt worse than the root canal!

He gave me Tylenol yesterday.. but I'm switching to Advil today. Thank you!

My dentist is the same way. They told me how much it cost and I was like 'But I have insurance.' The receptionist's reply was 'That's WITH insurance.' Beyotch!!! LOL

I have never had one but I have helped to preform like a hundred of them... you mouth will be sore prob for anout anouther day.. did ur doc give u any meds? if not then take IB profen. it helps reduce irritation and swelling. Basically thats why you should be in pain.. If you feel pain running through your tooth...still sensative to hot and cold call the doc again. there might be something he missed. But it should be fine. Usually they hurt so much because the doc is working so long in the same spot that you become supersensative to touch...
Good Luck feel better

Thank you. I wish he gave me something, but I'll just go with Advil. (Vicotin would have been nice!) He just called me and I'm going in at 8am tomorrow, before work, and he's going to file the tooth down more so the teeth don't touch. I am just worried he did miss something. Someone told me I should have gone to an oral surgeon to do this, but my dentist didn't even give me that option. He just scheduled me for a root canal with him. I'm not surprised by the soreness... but should I have the SHOOTING pain when the top and bottom teeth touch with slight pressure?

I've had two root canals and usually the pain goes away after a couple of days. Luckily I had some Vicatin though

It was very painful (but not as painful as before I went in for the root canal) and my jaw was completely swollen and bruised too so I was on meds for that too.

Usually that happens when your bite is off. Thats why he said that you shuld go back so u can file it. As far as an oral surgeon...thats silly. your dentist sent you to another doc to do the work, he must have sent you to something called an Endodontist. Usually you get sent to a specailist when the root canal is difficult. Very rarly do they miss things...but anything is possible. check to see if the actual tooth is sensative to hot and cold... that is a sure sign of a tooth that still has an active root. BUT be careful the tooth inside has to feel the pain.

Is it Tylenol Coedine, becuase that should work. He should have gave you an antibiotic to for infection atleast thats what my dentist did when I had a root canal.

Hope you feel better

Okay... so it's not 'bad' that a 'regular' dentist did this? I'm only wary because, besides x-rays and a cleaning, this was the first time I went to him. He kept taking x-rays to make sure everything was good, and he said it went 'amazingly well'. (doesn't FEEL that way! Maybe I'm just a baby!). I will check for the hot and cold... thank you. I grind my teeth, too (as of just recently... I blame wedding planning), so it REALLY hurts when I unintentionally grind now - with the temporary filling there. Ouch! What do you mean by 'the tooth inside has to feel the pain' for hot/cold sensitivity? (sorry I'm being a pain in the butt! I appreciate your knowledge and help on this!).
