NWR: Anyone work in HR? HELP!

NWR: Anyone work in HR? HELP!

Ok, so here's the situation: I work at a University, and I'm leaving my job when we get married. I'm moving (FH and I currently live an hour and a half apart). Ideally I wanted to leave at the end of May and start a new job in July (hopefully haha), since I'd like to have the week of the wedding off, and then the HM, and then moving....June is a wash. Problem is, I need benefits for June. I also have 16 days of vacation to burn.

My supervisor already knows, and said if I don't tell anyone I'm leaving and just take all my vacation starting June 2, and give my 2 weeks notice then (while I'm already away) I will get my benefits through the month, but that if they know I'm going to do that, no benefits after that 2 weeks. I don't like this b/c I basically have to lie to everyone and then just leave and not come back (but I REALLY don't want to come back!)

Anyone have any insight on this? Is there a less shady way to go?

SORRY SO LONG, TIA!

If your immediate supervisor is going along with it...you might just want to take it. Especially if you don't want to be without benefits. I'll ask my office manager/HR friend tomorrow. She is awesome and possibly find a loop hole somewhere for you!!!

thanks girls....basically, apparently at my institution if you work a certain number of days into a month (supervisor thought it was 3 or 5) then you will get benefits for the rest of the month when you leave no matter what, but it's just weird b/c I just want to do vacation into the month so I would want to give my notice prior to June, and just have my vacation run into June....does that make sense?

ARGH.

Yeah, she is, but she's also the kind of person who has been at the institution for her whole career and is really cynical and jaded about it, and is also trying to leave....she's very territorial and stubborn, but is also the kind of person who thinks her way is the only way, and that she always knows best....I mean, we get along....but many times I don't agree with the way she does things or the way she acts towards people....

the part I feel awful about is that I would have to leave after the school year is over without telling the students, and I wouldn't be able to really say goodbye to them at all! especially with some students I work with, I think it would seem like total abandonment.....

Re: NWR: Anyone work in HR? HELP!

I'm in HR and know a little about benefits (in general) - i'll say that benefits isn't my specialty and my hr knowledge is limited to large companies, not school districts.

Do you belong to a teacher's union? I really would check with someone from either there or just call up your health insurance company directly to find out how it works in terms of coverage. I know that in large publicly held companies it works like this:

the company pays for your benefits for the entire month. if your last day is mid-month you should already be covered through the end of that month. you just won't be covered the following month. however, you are entitled to COBRA (I would imagine you'd be eligible for COBRA or something like it). You basically pay whatever your COBRA fee is (they should tell you what it is in a letter on your last day) and then have the same coverage you did while you're an employee.

do you have a contract working at a school? if so, definitely check your contract to see if it has any information about benefits or vacation time. and/or check with the teachers union if you're part of it, before doing anything. In large companies, you are entitled to be paid out for the unused vacation time you accrued at the time of resignation. If all of what I said above applies to you in your school district, I would resign in late may, make your last day in early june (as planned). by then you should still be covered for all of june, and get paid your vacation days anyway.

AGAIN - I don't know how this works in a school setting so I highly recommend asking someone at your insurance company or in the benefits administration dept (i feel like there must be one.)

Feel free to FM me if you have any questions I might be able to help you with and good luck!!!

Thank you karabara!!

Actually I am an administrator at a University so my situation is more similar to large corporation--no union, I'm a professional staff member.

That's basically what I thought--it shouldn't matter if I tell them in May that I'm leaving in June, the benefits should still carry through June, right?

ETS: that's what you said. haha. I FMed you anyway....thanks again! I'm afraid to call my HR department b/c my University is small and everyone talks, so I don't want it to get out....argh....

even if you give your two weeks notice in may it goes by your last day...so if you leave in june then your benefits should last through june. I know this one lady and her last day at work was on a monday. Somebody asked why didnt she just make friday her last day and its because that monday was the first of the month and HR advised her to make it monday so she can have benefits the rest of the month
