So FH and I have been going back and forth on where we are going to live after the wedding. We were all gung ho about moving to South Carolina cause its beautiful and a lot more relaxing than NY. I was thinking about teaching after I'm done with grad school and he is in the Networking Admin field. Plus my parents have a beautiful house down there and offered to let us stay there until we figure out what to do about housing. Well..................... I won't be done with school until fall of '09 cause I can't take summer courses cause of work and I will not cram my schedule to be finished by my wedding day. Plus I just got a promotion so I think I'm gonna stick around in NY for awhile. Well FH is adamant on having a house when we get married but I see no point in going thriugh the trouble if we don't plan on staying in NY for too long. It's not like we are buying a bike. A house is a big commitment. But of course we don't want to spend the same amt for a mortage on rent every month! Soooooo I have started looking around at apartment complexes on LI like Hawthorne Ct in Commack and Avalon in Smithtown and Glen Cove and wanted to know if anyone has any advice on where to start looking and what I should know or expect. I think once I get some info FH will understand where I am coming from. We will still save up for the house but I think next year will be too soon and we will be cutting it close financially. I live in Huntington and work in the city, FH lives in Westbury and works in Melville-but hates his job (poor thing). Soo any advice on where to go would be great.
Thanks in advance ladies and sorry for rambling.

Re: NWR: Apartment hunting
Have you tried looking in Mineola?
Very convenient train station for you and a reverse commute for FH.

Right now we are in the Avalon complex in Melville. It's a nice development and the apartments are really nice - even the cheapest priced ones. I should be honest tho and tell you that the Avalons are pretty pricey for just an apartment. There are some perks but FH and I are looking to get out and buy a house b/c the rent here is almost the same as a house mortgage.

Yea I saw the prices but the area looks beautiful. I was even going to try Glen Cove but it is still pretty pricey. But I like the fact that I can do laundry and go to the gym and pool and never leave my complex. But it doesn't make sense to pay all of that money for something that isn't even ours. Thanks for the info.

FH & I looked at the Avalon too, but agreed....they are really expensive. It's extremely convenient, gorgeous, etc., but when we figured out our budget, it does come out to around what a mortgage would be, and we'd be able to save less. We are looking to move out of state in a year or two....and I still have student loans to pay....so we started looking at apts in peoples houses/smaller apts. We're actually going to sign on an apt in Oyster Bay...1 bedroom.....nothing compared to the luxury apts like Avalon, but a good $700 cheaper (and that's $$ we can put towards savings for our eventual house). And the way we looked at it, if we don't plan on staying too long anyway, now is the time to skimp a bit on the luxury. We definitely saw a bunch of total holes in the wall before we found this one, so look around. Good luck with your search.

Re: NWR: Apartment hunting
I like the Fairfield complexes. Im moving to fairfield on the bay - im right on the water and the rent is very reasonable and the complex is clean and the super is awesome.
We went to 15 complexes and prices were I was shocked.
We set a budget and looked at what was important to us.
