NWR: Apartments.....

NWR: Apartments.....

FH and I are starting to apartment hunt. Any advice from others who have been down this road? Best places to look, anything else you can think of that would be valuable to us in our search?

Thanks girls!

ETA: Looking in the Suffolk area (can't go farther east than Sayville-FH works in the city!) and he's from East Meadow, so anywhere in that area would be nice. Thanks!

Where exactly are you thinking of moving? I've lived in NYC, Queens, and now Nassau County. Suffolk I can't help you with. Sorry, haven't lived there yet.

Sorry girls! Forgot to say we're interested in Suffolk, but only as far East as Sayville (FH works in the city, so we can't go too far!) He's from East Meadow, so anywhere in that area would be nice.
Thanks for your help!

Anyway craigslist is great, also you can look in the pennysaver on LI.

I live in Holbrook (just a few minutes north of Sayville) and there are a few apartment complexes on Broadway Avenue, there's also a new complex being built on the corner of Broadway and Vets Highway (not sure if they're apartments or condo's).

We found our apt. on Craig's List... it's great. I highly recommend that Babylon area. It's centrally located, so you're near everything and it's about 15 mins (if even) from East Meadow. Super close to Montauk, Sunrise, and Southern State and not far from the LIE. There's a train station and it's super close to the water!!!
Good luck!

Re: NWR: Apartments.....

We found ours through a realtor which was a PITA in terms of the extra fee but we're glad we did - she found a lot of places we would not have known about otherwise.

I'm not sure if you're asking for help on areas to look or advice on what to do while you're looking. I live in Nassau so I can't help with the locations, but here's some advice on what to look for:

Bring a hair dryer with you and plug it into all the outlets to make sure they work.

Take your digital camera and take pictures of every room, especially damage. See if you can put a date stamp on the picture in case you need it later.

Make a list of anything that must be fixed before you move in and see if you can get a lease drawn up to protect yourself.

The lease should nail down the required time the landlord must respond to repairs, emergencies.

The lease should list your security (make sure you have double the rent ready) and provisions that it will be returned to you after inspection of apt before you move out.

Discuss things like snow removal for walkways/safety and landscaping.

Discuss parking - if there is a driveway/garage, can you use it?

Find out how big the water heater is and how old it is. Turn on all the faucets and the shower to make sure the water pressure is good and the water isn't discolored.

Check ceilings for water stains.

If the utilities will not be under your name, but you're paying for them per month, make sure you get copies of the bills.

If there are emergency repairs that need to be done and the landlord does not respond within an hour of your call, get their approval to have whatever it is fixed and then deducted from the rent.

Measure all your furniture and bring those figures and the tape measure with you. Measure each room of the apt to make sure it fits and to compare it to other places you've seen.

...............

Kay that's it for now.

Thought of another one. If you're on the first floor of a house and someone is on the second floor, find out if they have carpeting. If you're so bold, have someone go up there and walk around. If we had known how bad the noise would be from upstairs neighbors (hardwood floors only), we would have rethought this place.

INO, stay away from any Fairfield Apartment, they lock you into a contract and bind you to all the terms and conditions if you end up leaving before the contract ends.

Heatherwood apartments are very nice and they have complexes all over the area in Suffolk and we currently reside in one.

Good luck with the search!!!!!!!!

Yeah, we're leaning more toward Suffolk, but decided if we lived in Nassau, it would be nice to live near or in FH's hometown. Thanks for the info!
