NWR: Apartments

Hey ladies:

FH and I are looking at new apartments, neither of us have ever had to pay utilities in our apts. What's the average cost of utilities in a 2 bedroom?

TIA

it can vary obviously and everyone is different depending on cable plan they have, phone plan they have and for example here in queens we have con ed, i know in LI they use a different company.

I have the plan where its internet, phone, and cable on the same plan. But I also have HBO, showtime and cinemax and have the on demand channels for each movie channel so thats extra. Can be around $200 a month for all 3 together, depends of course if we order movies which we usually do. I priced it out and it was cheaper doing it this way.

Con ed- well their prices went up over 20% this summer out of nowhere many of us got $400-500 con ed bills in the summer and this was for just one month. Normally it was 200 and up in the summer but yeah alot of us got these bills and were so pissed

heat-will depend alot on whether its gas or oil.

Some apartments include all utlities in the price per month so when looking at apartment listings see if the price includes all utilities which would be GREAT since you dont have to try and figure out how much extra on top of rent/mortgage you would have to pay.

Also are you buying or renting? lets say you buy a condo or co-op then you would have to pay maintenance on top of the mortgage monthly payment. Co-ops have a higher maintenance and can be anywhere from $500-1200 on average. I would say i usually see $600-800 and this doesn't necessarily mean utilities are included in that. SOME places do include it in the maintenance but many don't. I dont have utilities included, but the good thing is that most maintenace fees are 50% deductible, some are 30-45 and some higher than 50%. Meaning when you get your taxes, lets say its 50% you get back 50% of what you paid. Condo's have lower maintenance fee's since condo's are more expensive so this way it balances it out. Many are lets say $200-500 a month

I am in a 2 bed apt in Lindenhurst and we pay for everything except heat.....our elec runs about 60-70 per month.

My old 1 bed I had to pay for heat and in the winter it would run just over 100/month....that was going back to 04' though and it was gas...so im sure it would be more now

I work for a large residential property managment company on Long island.. Our rents are fairly steep, as it is more upscale than some of the others. Utilities are typically not included your rent. More than likely, if you leased from a private homeowner, you wouldn't pay.

Water is your smallest bill...even at the house we own it is ridiculously cheap....
In an apartment, it will run you between $5-7 per month...usually paid every three months.

For your electric, you can go on a budget billing usually through a utility management company..if you are looking to move to a community/complex rather than someone's house.

Budget billing will run you betwwen $60-80 per month for electirc, then you settle up in September. Many people do not like this (including me) because they don't know if they will receive a credit, or owe money when it comes time to 'settle up'.

For heat, you just need to be careful. Find a place that has gas heat, as it is much more cost effective. Before we bought our home, we had an apartment where I managed, and it was a duplex townhouse, 2.5 car garage, and 2 bedroom, 2.5 bath, and 1400 square feet. Gas heat cost $120 per month...you can also call Keyspan, give them the address, and they will giveyou an avergae for that home/apt.

Good Luck to you!!!

live in apartment with all utilities (heat/water/dish for one tv/elect) included in Lindy 2 bedroom $1,420 per month. Huge with tons of closets - we only pay for internet/phone/cable $95 per month.

I think my cousin who has a 1 bedroom in Lindy pays $1,200 with a pet allowed pays electric which i think he said is $75-$100 and he does $95 for opt. (cable/phone/internet).

I'm in West Babylon and my Lipa bill is about $70 a month - cable with internet is $150 and phone is another $60.

Since it's an apartment complex, I don't pay heat or water.
