so tax time is coming, and i have always used my dad's accountant, but of course, we have to pay him! now that my fh and i are living together, he asked me if i want his dad to do my taxes. ffil worked for the IRS before he retired, and he wont charge!!
so my dad calls me today and said that he had a tax form for me and asked who's doing my taxes. i told him that my ffil will do them. he says to me, so its ok for his parents to know how much money you have, but you can't tell us how much billy makes? i was silent because i didn't know what to say! usually my mom is the one who meddles in my business.
my dad said he was joking, but he wasn't really. the thing is i don't really care if my in laws know how much money i have, but it's mainly because they don't care! they are so laid back and non judgmental!! we don't tell my parents how much he makes because they are just weird. they make comments now, and they don't even know! they'll say 'well he makes a lot of money, so blah blah blah' its none of their business, and it drives me crazy that they feel that it is their business!
does anyone tell their parents details of their finances??

Re: nwr: arg!!
finances are such a sensitive subject. i try not to divulge too much, but since the day i started earning wages my mother has had her nose in my financial business. it does get rather annoying. i completely understand why you'd feel uncomfortable telling them the details of your financial situation... if you can take care of yourself, then whose business is it how much you guys make?!?

I'm so sorry! I know how annoying this can be mainly because I am in the same situation. My parents are VERY involved in my finances. And it's not that I need her to be but she has trouble letting go. This is like the last thing she has her hands in and I think it makes her sad to think that she is done raising me.
FH has been on his own for a while [he is going to be 30], and my parents are very involved in his life too. They can't help it, it's just the way they are. I know they just do it cause they care but sometimes they make comments to both of us and it drives us up the wall. I know once we get married their will be no input from mom and dad but in the mean time it's driving us CRAZY!!!!

Very frustrating, yes. But just remember your parents are just being parents and probably just want to make sure that you are going to be ok financially.
But now that I think about it, my parents have never asked me how much FH makes, actually I don't think they know how much I make!
My FMIL does our taxes (she works for a CPA and he does them) and I like it because she has made comments here and there about how I like to shop quite a bit, etc and little comments to FH about my expensive taste. This way she knows I am MORE than pulling my weight and can spend what I want!

i'm pretty private about finances, but i don't have to work that hard to maintain the mystery--most seem to know better than to ask, including our moms.
