NWR: argh so annoyed!

NWR: argh so annoyed!

As many of you know we are building an apartment upstairs from my parents. We are in the home stretch now we ordered flooring and we just have to order countertops, shower door and some furniture ( we have some hand me downs already ).

Well, FFIL is doing a lot of the work for us, along with my dad and today he comes up to me and tells me that he doesn't think that we should have the electric stove up there bc its too much power and a fire hazard

we have been doing this for TWO YEARS you tell me this NOW? This would be a DEAL BREAKER!! I want it to be an apartment in my parents house NOT like I am living at home!

He is worried about using the stove while the a/c and other appliances are running. But we will just be extra careful and if it is THAT hot then I won't really be cooking!

THEN FFIL and my mom start making all these jokes about how my mom is going to do all the cooking and cleaning ANYWAY so what does it matter.

THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT!!!! We want to be INDEPENDENT and get a headstart on saving for a house thats all. . .

i am not backing down on this one - this is super important ( even though it may not seem that way )

thanks for letting me vent, i know all i have been doing is complain on here but i am so stressed out and i dont know what to do anymore!

In my apartment we can't use the microwave when the air conditioner is on or we will blow a fuse. Things like that happen, you just need to be careful, like you said.

Do you think they are going to do it anyway? I hope so.

I used to live in the apartment of my moms house and there was no stove and it stunk. Fh and I lived there for about 2 months before we moved out.

Stand your ground Tilde and make sure it happens

If your building an apartment - why dont they just put a sub-panel up there and you can put the stove on its own line.

well, if they have alrady been working on it for a while then wouldnt it be it silly for them to not put it in?? If you are careful enough about it, i'm sure you will be fine.

thanks girls for responding

yeah its not like we are strangers - i can just yell down like 'mom i am making pasta can you turn off the a/c for a minute?' and that's it. . .no big deal

plus my parents arent from here, they are VERY frugal when it comes from electricity. They will NEVER use the a/c in the day - they just go outside AND when they want to go to sleep they turn on the a/c an hour before and then turn it off when they go to bed.

and to add another line is like over $5K and it wouldn't make much sense bc we are trying to save money to buy a house so we are doing everything dirt cheap that we can't actually take with us into the house.

yeah from day one i said can we shower upstairs and can we cook upstairs - those were the two 'must haves' that *i* feel make it an apartment versus just living in my parents' house ( not sure if that makes sense to anyone else LOL )

so after all this work and time it is just so frustrating!

thanks for the suggestion!! i appreciate any help

we ARE doing it all ourselves - one of FIL's friends is an electrician so he did all the wiring BUT he doesn't feel comfortable doing the line himself he wants us to get someone else to do it

Sorry Tilde. I know how frustrating this stuff can be. Be strong and stand your ground. Worst comes to worst get your self a small electric griddle and a convection oven.

Shared space is NOT easy or ideal!

Re: NWR: argh so annoyed!

When my aunt and uncle lived in my parents basement apartment they had no shower, they had to use the shower upstairs. i dunno how they managed luckily they put one in when my parents moved into it. now its mine and i know i couldnt live without the shower or stove down here. the only thing i dont have is an oven so if i want to bake i have to go upstairs.

im trying to avoid even seeing my parents every day somehow lol so i see where ur coming from.
