A great book... with insightful quotes (one is teaching with fire) or a git card to borders or a great letter of encouragement they can open when they need to hear your voice to calm them down!

i have 2 books for her: one on the first days of school that i'm 'handing down' and eats, shoots, & leaves bc it's my all-time favorite grammar book. i love the idea of the pens and pads! i just have to come up with a clever 'basket'--something useful...

Those are good ideas! I am a secondary English teacher and my last day of student teaching was only months ago. Now I am the leave replacement for the woman who was my cooperating teacher. She gave me a gift card to Barnes & Noble and these great pens with black ink on one side and red ink on the other.

Re: nwr: attention teachers
so my original reason for coming on here yesterday was to thank everyone for good suggestions. i ended up getting her a desk-top organizer--the kind with drawers--and filling it with the 2 books i mentioned, grading pens, overhead pens, post-it pads, a date stamp & ink pad, and fat organizer clips. she cried when i gave it to her, and she seemed to really love everything.
it was so sad to see her go.

That sounds like a perfect gift. . . I am sure she is as sad to go as you are to see her to go. It's so great you had a positive experience with her. . .I have heard some horror stories. I cant wait until I can have a student teacher. . . It sounds like fun.
