I am going to be teaching reading in a few months. My principal approached me and told me to order whatever program I wanted to use. He doesn't want to use Wilson though and that's the only program I really know is successful. Does anyone have any experience with a good program. By the way, it's for 7th-12th grade! Thanks ladies!

Re: NWR: attn teachers!
I am also a reading teacher but in an elementary school. The only effective program that I know and use is Wilson. How abour reading recovery? I dont know if thats geared towards 7-12 graders, but I heard it is a great program.

What about orton-gillingham or PAF? Might be too easy for 7 -12 graders though.

I was going to suggest this, too. The hs where I work uses this successfully. Feel free to FM me if you have questions!

I have always liked recipe for reading. It is orton gillingham based :)

Re: NWR: attn teachers!
Fundations is for k-2 ONLY... it's put out by WILSON for CLASSROOM teachers to use for whole class instruction, not for the severely delayed readers that receive WILSON.
on the high school level, I would suggest WILSON as well... It is proven succesful for high schoolers and adults that are non-readers...
If not Wilson, I would look into Orton-Gillingham or PAF.... and I am assuming that this is for severely delayed high school readers or non-readers as these programs that mainly focus on decoding.

Re: NWR: attn teachers!
That's a shame that he won't look into Wilson? ??? It has an amazing success rate. I have a girl in my class who is dyslexic. She was not reading a THING... the school and her parents tried everything. PAF, Linda Mood-Bell, Learning Centers, etc. etc. She is in my class now in 5th grade and she is reading!!! granted she is still on a low level (1st-2nd grade) but when you couldn't read a thing only a year before, it is a huge step.
He may be hesitant on WILSON because to teach it, you must be certified WILSON...a regular teacher or reading teacher can NOT teach WILSON. you have to be WILSON certified and trained and it takes 2 years (although you can start teaching after the first year).
Hope you find something!

I teach special ed (5th grade). We are using Wilson and the Great Leaps program. I, highly recommend Wilson.
