NWR: baby name

NWR: baby name

ok this is a stupid question, but I'm planning on naming our baby girl Giovanna (when we have one- not preggo yet!) after my great-grandmother.

The correct Italian way to say this is Jo vahn ah.

I have heard alot of Americans say it like G-O-vahn-ah

I like both ways, but I prefer the correct Italian way.

Which do you like better? Do you think if we name her Giovanna most people will say G-O-vahn-ah?

hahah i know it's a stupid question, but I was just thinking about that this morning.

Maybe you could spell it differently? Otherwise she's going to be constantly correcting people. Either pronunciation is beautiful!

I prefer the Italian pronunciation....I never knew there was an option. I do believe that majority of ppl will pronounce it in the American style. Its just up to you if you are going to be up to correcting ppl all the time.

Most people don't say the correct Italian pronouciation for names. Gianni is supposed to sound like Johnny, but most don't say it.

I don't know if I should just go with the Americanized sounding to make it easier. hahah

Honestly, whichever way you spell it, it's going to pronounced wrong at sometime or another. It's inevitable with names like that.

I say go with 'giovanna' because that's the way your grandmother spelled it.

You can't control how people pronounce or read things, lol. When you have your little girl, just train her to say it right and she will train others

Re: NWR: baby name

My friend's daughter is Gianna and they call her Gee-anna, not Jonna, BUT I had a friend in highschool whose name was Marcella... Everyone called her MarSella, when really, in Italian it was mar-ch-ella! She just corrected them. No biggie....

My name is constantly misspelled, mispronounced, misremembered (FMIL called me Jasmine for the first 3 months FH and I were together!!)

Not a big deal to correct people. I like Jovanna's pronunciation better, but maybe that's the Italian in me!!!

btw, FH's name was ALWAYS mispronounced in school. It's Garo, pronounced 'goddo' pretty much if you can't roll the r, but so many people say it with a hard r or like Gary with an o.. Gar-o In that case the alternate name was/is ugly, but giovanna and jovanna are both pretty, so I wouldn't worry!!!

You have a while anyway!!
