NWR - Bat Mitzvah gift

What's an appropriate $ amount for a Bat Mitzvah gift? I haven't been to any since I was a kid and have no idea. It's in California, not NY, so I have absolutely no frame of reference.
Anyone know what's appropriate?

ETA: Second cousin's daughter who I see at family events and on holidays, but not especially close to. No expense for traveling, I live in CA. I don't wan to seem rude by not giving enough, but don't really want to spend more than I need to, as money is a bit tight right now.

Depends on how they are related. Go in multiples of $18 though.

$$ is always good. That what was suggested to us.

California or New York, it doesn't matter. I would agree that multilpes of $18 on up are good. Of course you have to consider the expense of traveling to and staying in Calif. It's a hard decision. You could always ask the other cousins what they are giving.

I'm not sure what the multiples of 18 thing is all about... is that some kind of Jewish tradition I'm not aware of?

Anyway, I'd say an average amount I got for my Bat Mitzvah (although, that was almost 10 years ago now) was about $50 - $75 from people who weren't really close to me and therefore didn't have any reason to give a whole lot more (or weren't really rich and showing off... or whatever).
