NWR (because lets be serious, nothing i ever post is wedding related) - TEACHERS

Out of my 29 third graders, I have one kid who is driving me to the looney bin. He is so poorly behaved... he lies, he cheats, he steals, he's a monster to the other kids... and then he cries 'WHY DOESNT ANYONE LIKE ME?' umm could it be because you TORTURE them ya lil sh*t?

anyway...I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions for me. I'm fresh out. I've tried behavior charts, praise vs. punishment, he's in therapy for anger management and he sees a Partnership with Children counselor every two days at school.

Im at my wit's end. I dont know what else to do. The parents care, but I think they are just really making it worse because they give in to all of his demands.

the grandfather said that i have to be stern and strict with him or else he will take advantage of any niceness.

So...what do i do? He disrupts the class at least 5 times a day with his anger fits and temper tantrums.

Any ideas?

I had a kid like this last year. I moved him to sit next to me, and I had him work in groups in the morning...
example: I would have four kids get together and work a puzzle for me, another day I had him bring in something for a 'show and tell' kind of thing...

he was 8 at the time so hes about your children's ages...

Have you considered having him do extra things like homework checker? Board washer? etc...

Yeah I tried that,... i made him the Worksheet Distributor... but he kept not giving worksheets to three specific people and it made for some chaos.

He won't work in groups because he insists that everyone is out to get him in trouble (myself included). The kids hate him because he literally beats on them and makes their lives miserable. He spit at a girl once. He even says he hates his own mom because she wont let him play video games during the week. He's a real winner, this one.

All I want to do is get through to him that I DON'T hate him, and that all I want is for him to succeed in third grade... and right now he's not.

I feel like you are describing one of my students.. I tried to have serious talks with him.. being stern.. detentions..nothing really works..I found that peer influence works a little. If I say 'We are waiting on 'Ryan' to move on', sometimes the other students will pressure him to do the right thing. I have found in my situation he wants to be accepted and liked, but pushes away any chance he gets...I'm sorry you are going through this..

I had a TERRIBLE kid my first year teaching. He would throw desks and scream and cry. Eventually I got to the point where I just ignored him. It wasn't very nice of me but I had 29 other kids in that classroom that needed my help and were willing to take it so I figured this little jerk didnt want my help so I'd just stop talking to him.

I had a boy like this last year. He had SUCH anger problems OMG he would go from 0 - 100 telling kids he was going to beat them up and the look on his face WOW!!! Such anger!!!!! After trying everythinggggggg.... I had a sit down with him. And you know what it worked! At the beginning sit downs didnt work with him bc it took him a while to feel like he could trust me.

But sit down with him and honstly care. Kids know when you really care about them. Talk about how he's feeling- hows mom? Just sit down and talk to him. Talk to him about how it makes you feel when you see him so angry and bothering children and how if he treats children badly, they are not going to like him.

When he flies off the handle... Just say his name and say 'remember what we talked about.' Believe it or not, it actually worked where I saw the anger from his face start to slip away. Tell him to go wash his face and calm down. This will not work with all children. I have a child this year I want to throw out the window! Ughhhhh theres always one that drives you nuts EVERY YEAR!!!!

yeah you are 100% correct. once things start going well, he does something to fawk it up. I'm sorry youre going through it too. Whenever I use the 'we're waiting on 'Jack* to continue' he puts on this ugly grumpy face and throws a temper tantrum. i have no idea what else to do.

I feel like the whole 'we are waiting for Jack' thing doesnt work in these instances because sometimes they get what they want (attention from you and the class). Def. try the sit down conversation and this time dont try to be stern.... talk to him by using feelings (how it makes you feel and how it makes his peers feel).
