Ok - so here's the deal...we are expecting a change to happen pretty soon (don't want to jinx it though) and FH gave the green light for a new digital camera (within budget) if everything goes well so....can someone help - I need a digital cameras for dummies lesson...I have no idea where to begin.

Ang -- we use lots of them for work so I can give lots of experience related advice. Of them all I most love my tiny Pentax Optio S -- its claim to fame is that it fits into an altoids tin, whic his true and it takes great pix. The rate limiting factor for me about taking pic is having the camera so the fact that it is so easy to throw into a purse -- even an evening purse makes it a huge winner.

I got one of those Kodak digital cameras with the printing dock. I really love it. It was pretty expensive ($399 ish) but it was a gift, so hey, not my $$ I think Kodak makes them in a lot of price ranges though. It's very easy to use as well.

Some stuff to consider:
-how many megapixels can you afford? -digital zoom (not as good as optical zoom) -optical zoom -battery life/ how many does it need? -ease of use -how much does size matter to you? does it need to be super tiny?
hope that helps!

I have a sony 5.0 megapixel...The printing quality is amazing, I have a cannon printer, you can't tell the difference, they come out looking like kodak quality prints....its a bit expensive though i think we paid 399 for it, but it should have gone down in price since then, bc sony just came out with a 7.0 megapixel camera (I want it NOW)...I'm obesessed with taking pictures, I bring my camera wherever we go, FH thinks I'm nuts...

I know I want it so badly, but I'm a big camera person, when the first digital cameras came out, FH got me one, then two years later I wanted a better one, so I got the 5.0 megapixel, and my dad got me a digital camcorder as well...so I can't get it just yet.... maybe in a few months...

If you want quality pictures at a good price I would be looking at cameras no lower than 4 megapixels. I think the standard is $100 per megapixel, although now the 4 megapixels are coming down in price to make room for the 7 megapixel. Also make sure you have a good zoom feature. My camera has 3x opitcal zoom which is the lens and then it extends to 11x digital zoom. Digital zoom relies on technology to zoom in, but the more you zoom it - the grainer the picture will be. The leading manufacturers of digital cameras are Nikon, Olympus, Sony and my favorite Canon

Forgot to add, most cameras come with a usb cord to hook up directly to your computer or printer. Through experience I found that connecting it to the computer would drain my battery. the pics would also take a while to download. I went to best buy and for $20 purchased a card reader. In an instant, my pics download into the computer. I also purchased a small picture printer that connects with my camera to print 5x7's

She liked mine and it was a measly 3.2 megapixels
