NWR: Buying a used car

FH and I are buying a used car from a 3rd party tomorrow - not a dealership.

Will we have to pay any taxes or anything? Anything I need to know regarding DMV paperwork? I am going right to the DMV afterwards to get it registered...

When you write the purchase price on the bill of sale, write it down for less so its less taxes you have to pay. When you go to register the car, you will need the title and bill of sale in order to register it. At that time you do need to pay sales tax, most people never have a problem writing a lower amount on the sales price to save you some money.

Yes you will pay taxes...its based on the price you buy the car for. DMV is going to ask for a bill of sale, you can download the form online.

people sometimes put down a lesser price on the bill of sales so that they get charged less in taxes....

most people do put a lesser price... just BE CAREFUL with this, I know a few people who were scammed...

one person bought a truck and was given the wrong title, he was given one for a bronco when he bought a jimmy... and the guys up and disappeared.

also I know someone who had a problem with a car they purchased privately and the car was messed up when they went to get their money back they gave them the amount on the bill of sale, because if its a cash deal, there's nothing saying you paid more.

make sure you write up a bill of sale AND that you write up a contract.

The person I am buying from is a friend of a friend - they are older so I think they are pretty trustworthy. And the other good thing is that it was just inspected last month so I know it is in good shape.
