Re: NWR: California!

I loved San Diego!

We did the same trip in the opposite direction a few years ago!

Here's some of what we did:

San Diego Zoo

The Shout! House - Dueling Piano Bar (Gas Lamp Quarter)

Drove north on PCH to San Simeon to visit the Hearst Castle (http://www.hearstcastle.com/ )

Stayed in Monterey / Carmel area over night

Drove west to Lake Tahoe, gambled and relaxed for a couple of days

Drove north east to San Francisco

Went to an Oakland A's game, stayed overnight in San Francisco

While in San Fran, we walked around down by the pier a bit ... it was really nice there.

FH wanted to go to Alcatraz, but it didn't work out b/c we had to catch our plane.

We flew home from the Oakland airport. Whatever you do, stay away from the Holiday Inn by the airport in Oakland. It was horrible! We refused to stay there, and ended up getting a suite over lookig San Francisco bay instead!!!

Yosemite which is near San Francisco is great. Also Muir woods nr. SF to see the giant trees. Other cities: Monterey, Santa Barbara, Venice Beach (in the evening) Laguna Beach ( art boutiques all over and friday nights they have a wine and look festival) La Jolla. Also frommers.com and fodors.com are great resources. Have a great time

I would say go to a winery, there are a lot about 40 minutes outside of San Fran! I only stayed iN San Fran for a night but you must go down to the Piers and if you can take a tour of Alcatraz!

We did this trip last year and had an amazing time! Two of our favorite things we did between San Fran & San Diego are the Hearst Castle and the Ronald Regan Library (which I went soley to make my husband happy but ended up loving it!).

Enjoy your trip!

ps... we also really enjoyed the 17 mile drive which brings your through pebble beach golf course and some other amazing views.
