I have a job interview for a teaching position at a Chicago University and I'm going out there next week. I have never been to that city and would love some feedback on Chicago from anyone who has been there or lives or lived there.
I currently live in NYC and LOVE it - I would definitely say that I am a city personality, so I'm excited at the prospect of moving to another city - but ANY info on it helps, like:
cost of living compared with NY? general pluses? general minuses?
DH is in finance so it's not a huge deal for him to switch jobs - Chicago is a little far from our families, but if we love the city (and IF I'm offered the job), then we'd move.
any info is GREATLY appreciated!

Re: NWR - Can anyone tell me about Chicago?
All I can say is the 1 day that I spent there, I was very pleased. It's much cleaner than NYC. My cousin lives there and loves it.

Re: NWR - Can anyone tell me about Chicago?
I am actually going on Monday for business and was there in May for business as well. I really liked it, it was clean, definite city feel to it...Only thing is that it is VERY cold....In May I was freezing so I am dreading next week... If you want, I will let you know how the weather was mid-Janaury...

I lived there for a couple years after I graduated from college. I LOVE it there and would love to move back. There are lots of similarities to NY and I do not think it would be a huge transition. I would say that the day to day living expenses are about the same, but the rent and cost of homes are less. My best friend lives there, and I try to go 2x a year.
Good luck - I am sure you will love it!

Re: NWR - Can anyone tell me about Chicago?
Thanks so much for the info - all of it is greatly appreciated!
I leave on Tuesday evening so I'm figuring experiencing Chicago in late January is a good indication of how cold it will be.
The more I read about the city the more I'm convinced I'm going to love it - now I just have to get the job!!!!!!!

Re: NWR - Can anyone tell me about Chicago?
i live there now, and it's a great city... i have to be near water, and lake michigan is beautiful!
it can get pretty cold here, so bring layers of clothing! and summers can be quite hot. but chicago is def. more 'conservative' if you will, than NYC. i can't wear the same stuff here that i could get away with in NYC
but it is cleaner, people here are friendly, and there is so much to do--- very different neighborhoods. overall, housing is cheaper---what i am paying for my mortgage (bigger space) was what my sister pays for rent in NYC. food can be just as expensive.
if you lemme know what area of chicago you would be in i could tell you more...
good luck on your interview!

Re: NWR - Can anyone tell me about Chicago?
I too have glowing things to say about Chicago. I went a few times while I was in college because it was only a 3-4 hour drive from Indy. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the Chicago style pizza, but I wouldn't say that outloud (I'll always prefer NY pizza!). Cubs games are a ton of fun, but early season games are COLD! I went to one on Easter and froze my butt off! Wrigleyville is a fun place to live and yes, while the food, clothing etc can be just as expensive as NYC, the rents and mortgages are a tad less. Good Luck to you!
