NWR career vent

NWR career vent

Most of you don't know me, but I have tried getting a teaching job for the last 3 years, and I feel like grad school was such a waste of an investment. Between paying for student loans and the wedding, I am beyond stressed. I hate my job working in customer service for Kaplan Test Prep, but I have to keep a steady income in order to afford this wedding since FH only works part-time. Anyone else feeling trapped and beyond frustrated with their circumstances? i know I can't be alone.

I am a school counselor and I know how you feel....everyone asks me how I got a job right after grad school. I got a job at a non profit organization that provided after school programming at schools. It was part time and I went to grad school full time. I made sure that I kept in good relations with the principal and staff. Luckily a counselor was retiring and they had an opening, since I knew the staff I interviewed for the position and got it

Maybe you can try substituting in the mean time...

I'm in the same boat. I have a law degree, but I haven't passed the bar and I can't even seem to find a decent paralegal job. It's so frustrating. I'm still doing the same work I was doing before I even went to college. So I feel you!

Yeah I subbed for two years, but I needed health insurance and a steady income. Going to apply to the Catholic schools in my area for next year (due to City schools indefinite hiring freeze). I was also going to consider going back for a Special Ed extension certificate.

Crashing.....I have been school hopping for the past 5 years so I understand your pain. I will be starting yet another school this year at a charter school.

check out charterschooljobs.com and keep an eye on olas and the weekend review in the NY times.

Good Luck!!

Ahh this is what scares me I'm a 2012 law grad to be, and all I keep hearing is terrible news for lawyers. I wish you the best of luck, and hope you find something soon!

I'm in the exact same boat!! I have an education degree and masters and can't find anything! It's terrible, but try to keep your head up - at least that's what everyone's telling me! lol

I'm looking outside of teaching in the meantime. It definitely bothers me that I went though a ton of work to become a teacher and another several years for literacy and I'm not even using what I've practiced. I have many days where I just get discouraged and depressed but in the end I just hope everything will work out!

Good luck on your search!

thanks all, I feel a little bit better knowing that I'm not alone. I'm surprised by how many law grads are worried about jobs; I speak with a lot of students who have taken the LSAT and plan on taking the Bar and they have such high hopes. I hope this economy bounces back sooner rather than later so that we can enjoy spending money on our honeymoons!

It's definitely not an easy time to be a teacher (and a lot of other things with this economy!) I have been there- I taught Pre-K while going for my masters at night to gain experience. After grad school I taught for one year in a Catholic school ( try for a Diocese of Brooklyn or Manhattan school- they pay more than RVC). After that one year I got a job in a public school on LI to only be excesses with 4 others bc we had too many people coming back from maternity leave! I went to the city after that and now will be going into my 2nd year at the school. It can happen! I sent out about 350 resumes last summer!

What are you certified in?

Re: NWR career vent

ugh I have a masters in clinical art therapy that I got in 2010... i looked for over a year but found nothing due to the freaking hiring freeze and economy!!! I found a job as a day care teacher in nov 2010. This made me realize I wanted to be a teacher and I decided to go back for my second masters in early childhood education. I am now entering my second year and still am a 3-year-old teacher at my day care. It is a very low paying job, but its a job and I adore my class and parents! It has given me a ton of experience. I am slated to graduate in June 2012 right before my wedding...

My biggest concern is JOB as all of you as well! I hopefully will have a few leads, but I am not keeping my hopes up but being hopeful. :-/ I just hope that this isn't a dead end field either, the only good thing is I will hopefully always have my day care job... but its not enough income to live in dumpy long island :( My FW can't work right now either which makes everything WORSE!!! UGH money sucks and NY sucks lol
