NWR - Cell Phone internationally

I am leaving for DR in 2 days. I need to take a cell phone with me since I need to be in contact with my family in regards to my grandparents (I am the caregiver) I spoke with verizon and it will basically cost me an arm and a leg to use my BB there. I was looking for another option. A prepaid phone, prepaid sim card? anything?

does anyone have suggestions?

I'm not sure how a prepaid phone works internationally, perhaps you can just buy phone cards and call from the room?
Or set a time to talk each day and skype via laptop?

yea, buying a calling card is the only option i have right now.

ur going to have to go prepaid....u can try and find someone with an unlocked phone or an att phone that uses a sim and then buy the sim when you get there. fh's friend did that. Otherwise if you turn off your data and messaging and just ur bb as a phone that would work too. I did that when we went to the bahamas. I just got all the emails and texts and whatnot when we got back and I turned it back on. My luggage was lost so I had to go that route... a little pricier but for a few quick calls not horrible.

This is not as expensive as I would've thought. Just dont talk for more than 5 mins, and call once per day. That's $10 per day, which is alot however if YOU MUST call, then do it.

The prepaid sim with the unlocked phone is prob cheaper...especially if you buy it when you get there with a local # to DR.
We had turned our phones off but because of the luggage situation I HAD to call and deal with that. Definitely not ideal but not as pricey as I thought it would be.
