NWR: Chase Bank - update

NWR: Chase Bank - update

So FH and I decided to open a joint checking account to officially combine our finances (we already pay all of our bills together, we were just too lazy to redo our direct deposits at work- lol). I opened a Chase online checking account last week and it seemed to go through okay. We just got our ATM cards and were gonna activate them this weekend and I got a letter today saying that they closed the account! I don't even know why! We both have good credit and pay all of our bills on time and do direct deposit with our current banks.

The only thing I can think of is that I placed a fraud alert on my credit report through the 3 major credit reporting agencies just becuase I'm so afraid of identity theft. The way it works is that they're supposed to call you when you try to open a new credit card account to verify that you're you. Does anyone know if they do this with checking accounts too? If they couldn't reach me, maybe they just decided it was fraud?

Has this happened to anyone else?
Update: I called this morning and it as because of the fraud alert. They said to go into a regular branch to reopen an account.

Thank you to everyone who replied!

This is going to sound bad, but do you or FH have an 'ethnic' sounding last name.

I know someone who works for Chase and said that new accounts and loans are routinely denied to minorities solely based on the sound of their name.

I would call them anyway and see what's up. They at least owe you an explanation as to why this happened.

And try Commerce, who is merging with Bank of America. Their rules for checking and saving account are no where near as strict as Chase. And you get much better customer service.

My sister works for Chase. I'm gonna let her read your post later and see what she makes of it.
