NWR - christening

FH and I were invited to the christening the baby of one of his friends. I have never been to a christening, what happens at one? Also what is an appropriate gift?
TIA!

There's the actual baptism at the church (mass) usually followed by a party/dinner, etc.

As far as an appropriate gift - I always give money ($100-$150) or a savings bond.

to explain a little further, there is a mass were the child is blessed with both Holy water and oils, in the way that John the Baptist baptised Jesus. the congregation is usually asked to renew their baptismal vows, and also is called upon to help nurture the child in the ways of the church and in life etc...also Godparents are confirmed for the child, and help with the blessings.

Good job Jess in explaining...you get an A in religion!

I think bonds are a pain...you have to provide the SS# of either parent or the child...at least thats how its been for the past year or so...cash gift in the amount that the girls mentioned is appropriate...

ETA: Although wait...I have a Christening to go to at Russos and I think we're going to give $250-$300...

It is actually really nice-in my church they hold up the baby and have everyone bless them

WOW - guess I haven't been to a christening in a long time....sounds like you all give what you'd give at a wedding ($300)...I have only given $50 for non-family christenings...$75 - $100 for family.

At the Christening for my niece (this past October) most gifts were clothes or toys for the baby. There were a handful of savings bonds. As godmother I bought her Christening gown.

Edit for spelling
