Fh and I are FINALLY starting to look for our own place. Ive heard pros and cons to all of the options. We found a BEAUTIFUL Co-Op right in our prime area and its super cheap but I want to know from all of my wonderful LIW ladies what you guys have experienced or would suggest. Thanks in advance!
I've never lived in a co-op myself, but I've heard horror stories from others who have. In my opinion, if you can afford a condo, that's the way to go!

NWR- Condo, Co-Op, Townhouse or Rent?
FH owns a condo, which is where we will be living together once we are married. He's had a great experience since he bought it and I love it too. I've found that its cheaper than what some of my friends pay in rent and its yours to do whatever you want with. What area are you looking for?

Were looking in the Selden/Centereach/Coram/Farmingville area. Were both in Selden FD so we cant be more then a mile outside of the district.

I don't know if Holbrook is too far, it's about 10 min from Selden, but I live in a condo here and love it. (Unfortunately for me) the price has dropped drastically here so it's really affordable. FM for details. The community is nice and the condos are house style so you don't feel you are in an apartment. My friend lives in Bretton Woods and raves about it.
Then, I have friends that live in Co-ops and have heard horrible things. You have to get board approval for many things, some don't allow pets, and although price may be low maintenance prices are usually high.
Good luck whatever you decide!

Thanks for all the replies ladies. FH and I went to see an apt tonight and met the sweetest agent. The apt wasnt for us but meeting her was fate. She offered us a free first time buyers counseling session and will go over all options in depth with us. Im super excited about this. She also reccomended looking into first time buyer assistance programs and I found that we qualify for quite a few federal grants. @bridetob - unfortunately we cant be more then a mile outside of selden because were members of the fire department. we really dont want to transfer so our area is limited to the ladies that suggested bretton woods- were definately thinking about that. the agent we met suggested it too! thanks again for the advice girls! <3

If it's short term, don't bother. It's really hard to try and sell coops these days.

We recently bought a co-op in north isle village in Coram and we love it! The prices here were unbeatable! Our mortgage and common charges come to less then rent and that's amazing considering how much our wedding is costing. Day after the storm, the co-op already had tree guys here cutting down all the fallen trees. There are cons, like dragging your laundry to the laundry house but it is onsite and there are several within the development. Good luck and def check out north isle if coram is in your area of to see places. We saw about 6 places and 2 of the 6 were in excellent condition so check out a few! Good luck!
