Yes, but for me it was worth it bc I really wanted to keep an eye out and see how my credit was getting better.
U can also go to experian.com (one of the credit reporting agencies) and get a free credit report. U r entitled to 1 per year, by law.

Re: NWR: Credit Score
Usually your credit card company whether is visa, amex mastercard, they can send out your credit report to you if you request one. Don't think there is a charge. Or maybe go to a bank and have a broker check, might be a fee?
I did freecreditreport.com but ended up paying like $10

Re: NWR: Credit Score
The three credit bureas that pretty much have your life in your hands it Equifax, Transunion and Experian.
If you go to www.ftc.gov, they will explain to you how to obtain all 3 reports. You should get all 3 because sometimes something is on 1 and not the other.

Definitely do this once a year, it is worth any amount that they charge. First time I did this I found a lot of discrepancies, charge accounts listed as open when I had closed them, some stores long gone, my mortgage listed as revolving credit instead of real estate. The most disturbing thing was my sister's name popped up on my report. We have similar names, and the first 5 digits of our SS number is identical. A couple of letters, and all this was straightened out.

Not sure if you know but, for those who check their credit report frequently DON'T ...it actually lowers your score. My FBIL is a mortgage loaner and informed me not to, he said it drops down to a couple of points, don't know why! Just be aware

I check my credit score once a month to monitor it and it has only gone up, it has never gone down.

Re: NWR: Credit Score
The score used by banks, mortgage companies, etc is your FICO score. Go to myfico.com and get it - it's $16. According to Suze Orman, this is the only one worth paying for since it's the one used by anyone you are trying to get money, etc from.
Can you tell I am reading a Suze Orman book now?

Checking your own *score* does not make your credit score go down. It's called a soft inquiry or something like that, and it doesn't affect your credit. Getting reports once a month may - but again, since it's the consumer checking their own report, it may not.

Go with freecreditreport.com It is so worth it. I pay $12 per month and they track my score. I caught a screw up made by my credit card one day because they sent me an alert
