ladies I need to start getting my resume out there..
For those of you who are teachers, how do you recommend I go about doing this?
I will be certified to teach grades 1-6... I've already checked on OLAS and have applied to everything I possibly could.
Any other pointers would be greatly appreciated.
THANK YOU!

Re: NWR: crunch time - TEACHERS (09er)
i was going to suggest olas....but you already have done this...so my only other suggestion would be to do go to individual school websites and fill out online resumes....and also if you happen to know anybody who could take your resume to school with them...

i agree. even if the school is not posting a position you should still send it because so much happens last minute during the summer. good luck!

I am a teacher, and when I was looking for a job I sent my resume to every single school district. Worst case scenario, if you don't get a position you can always sub which will put you in a position to get a regular position. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I taught in a Catholic school for two years to get experience and found it much easier to get a job after that!

Re: NWR: crunch time - TEACHERS (09er)
contact the schools directly. i emailed the principals of the schools i was interested in with my cover letter and resume. i also made sure to check out their website so i was familiar with the school and incorporated that and how my previous experience/knowledge would be a great fit for their school (ie - 'i noticed you have a great _______ program. i was especially interested in this because my past experience in ____________ would be great for this' - that was badly phrased, but you get the point). no one likes a generic cover letter and this'll help you stand out (do this for the interview too - come armed with specific questions about the school). you may want to call the office first, saying you want to submit a resume and was wondering who you should send it to and if fax or email would be better. some schools have the heads of certain departments or the ap's do the hiring and might direct you there.
also in your cover letter end with a phrase about contacting them. for example, in mine i put: 'I am not presently in New York, but would be available for a scheduled telephone interview at any time. I will also do my best to accommodate a personal interview with you upon request. I will call you in a week to confirm which if any of the above options would work for you. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.' and then in a week call them. don't be a pain, but just say that you had sent in a resume and you wanted to confirm it was received. the hiring party may want to talk to you then and at the very least it brings your resume to the top of the pile. says you're interested and helps connect a person to the name.
i'm getting certified through the nyc teaching fellows so don't have much formal teaching experience (just day cares and a year as a teaching assistant, etc.) plus my undergrad was in sculpture, but i followed this when i was looking for my job last year. i sent out my resume on a thursday, was contacted on friday, had my interview and was hired on monday.
my advice - don't just send stuff out - be proactive! being a bit aggressive helps. good luck!
