I would just get it done, the anticipation is usually the worst part. Between november-december i had to get work done just about every week at the dentist nd the first few times without any novacaine or any of that bc i had an infection and you cant use novacaine with it, well even if you did it wouldn't work. So i had drilling and needles stuck up there without anything. It wasnt as bad, and when i had to get my tooth pulled again i was so scared before but i didnt even feel it when it was done. I had all these problems bc i let things go instead of getting it done right away so its better to just go
ALSO just so you know, most insurance doesnt cover implants, mine doesn't and the dentist said most don't. Infact to get it, i have to go to this place in the city to get it done. Luckily they have a deal with the person who does the dental implants and my dentists patients get charged alot less. I forgot how much originally it costs but i remember thinking it was pricey, but my dentist got it for me for $600. So although I have insurance, i still have to pay for the dental implant out of my own pocket.

yeah my insurance doesn't cover it either. $600!!!! thats an awesome price! I think i was wuoted $2000 or something. For 1 freaking tooth. Who did you go to?
I feel weird not going to my dentist. I've only been going to him for about 6 months, and like you pretty much was there once a week for 2 months for work. It's not that i feel weird.. i just feel bad, i know it's stupid.. i dunno.

well my dentist told me i have to go to this place in the city to get it done and not at his place so i have no choice.
Yeah i think i remember it being $2k as far as what the dentist told me it usually goes for. But like i said my dentist sends his patients to this guy and this guy will do it for $600 for his patients. My dentist is in Queens

Re: NWR: Dental Implants (from 10' board)
I had one done last year. the surgeon charged $2000 for the implant. but that was just to put the screw into the jaw!!. he then sent me back to my dentist for an abutment to connect screw to cap (either $250 or 400) and the cap was another $800!!!
so find out how the dentist works - - some do all of it but I got stuck referred to a specialist who didn't
as far as the actual work I don't think the pain/discomfort was much different than the pulling of the tooth.

I would suggest though that you call you insurance to confirm that it is covered. Most insurances dont cover them =/ And most only cover a small portion OR they cover the pulling of your tooth but NOT the actual implant itself. THEN you have to find out if your covered for the crown that has to be placed afterwards.
I have 1 implant, it was a tooth ALL the way in the back of my mouth but was told if I didnt get it my teeth would eventually start to shift!!! It ended up costing me $3000!!!
Dental insurance *****! It doesnt always cover much and you usually have a cap on what they pay yearly and then its all out of pocket for you. A lot of times they feel an implant is cosmetic and not a necessity EVEN when the doc says it is. I even had my doc write a letter of medical necessity and they still denied. AND find out what type of implant they cover. If you have any questions PLEASE FEEL FREE TO FM ME!

Re: NWR: Dental Implants (from 10' board)
I had an implant done when they were relatively new- 2001 or 2002. It FAILED 4 years later. Became completely infected and they had to remove.
It was a horrible, horrible experience. I only share this so that you can make sure to RESEARCH your Dentist and what their failure history with implants is. I had the implant removed in 2006 and have no plans of ever getting one again. I'll do a bridge. My teeth haven't shift or anything- it's my lower left side. You can't see it or anything. I went to a 'fancy pants' surgeon who was ended up leaving my old dentist office. I switched dentist- everything. They tried to bill me the $1000 for removing the implant, even though it was their faulty initial work. Just be careful. The recover can be long, there's a period when it'sjust the screw in your mouth that it's really sensitive to cold ect.

Re: NWR: Dental Implants (from 10' board)
Implants are a good option only if you are missing the tooth. If you can save the tooth first, either with a root canal or crown, that is better than extracting to do an implant. No matter how successful they can be, nothing is as natural and more biocompatible than your own tooth.
BTW - there is no such thing as a 'dental implant specialist.' There are periodontists (gum specialists), oral surgeons, or general dentists who place implants. There is no ADA recognized speciality for implants - keep that in mind.

I'm in the process of getting them right now. I have the metal posts in, just doing the whole waiting/healing process and then I get the 'teeth'. FM me if you would like more info.

Re: NWR: Dental Implants (from 10' board)
I have to have on as well. They are so expensive and even after my insurance I still have to be pay 1650 without the cap. So I am going to Stony Brook dental school to have it done for 900. Its isn't supposed to be painful.
I was also an assistant fo YEARS. Implants are a surgery and not something to do with a strange dentist who is not recommended ....IMO..I wouldnt just go somewhere because its cheaper. Implants are great but there is always a chance they will fail... Its a long process and worth it because leaving an empty space in your mouth will eventually make all your teeth shift causing gaps...not pretty. Anyway...feel free to fm any questions
