NWR - digital camcorders

My generous mother is going to buy us a digital camcorder for a shower gift. We are trying to stay around $500. Does anyone have any recommendations of a specific brand. TIA

I got Canon DC-20 as an engagement present. It records directly to DVD. We really like it. NOt sure of how much it is. Generally, Canon is very user friendly and Sony is not.

Good luck.
