NWR: Do you think 9/11 should be a National Holiday?
Personally, I'm shocked it hasn't already been done. It's been 5 years and they haven't started or finished the murals. If we can celebrate and remember Brooklyn-Queens Day have the many Nationality parades, Labor Day. If we can remember the travisty of the Holocaust and Hiroshima and Nagasaki and have museum. murals and so forth then should also remember those that died on 9/11- JMO

i have mixed feelings - i don't wanna see stores having 911 blowout sales. i don't want people to use it as a reason to have a long weekend.
i'm not sure if the rest of the country feels as strongly about this as new yorkers and i would hate for anyone else (other further states, i mean), to think that new york has to rule the roost as usual.
i do think it should be commemorated, but i fear that the tangible results will not be what was intended when creating such a holiday.

I do BUT as someone who lost a family member in the WTC our concern as a family is that it will become something that is commercialized, i.e. a labor day sale at macy's....etc i know its different to look at this from this perspective.....and i know there are no pearl harbor sales, but you never know. In general we just hope people never forget because we won't so for us we don't need a holiday its a daily rememberance.
good idea for a post!!!

Ok I'd love to see somekind of Rememberance Day or something...but let's face it...on the holidays meant to remember and honor those who faught & died for our freedom most people just look at it as another day off for a long weekend or a chance to BBQ & party....how many people really use Memorial Day to remember what it was intended for?
I feel like most events in history it is important for those of us who experienced it first hand to share our stories and accounts of the day to those who have no idea what it was truly like, and for the generations to come, so that hopefully we don't get complacent and ignorant to the dangers that surround us..and that we honor the people murdered that day.
I personally found it as a wakeup call that day that life is short, and you never know what day could end up being your final one...i try and tell people that all the time, especially when they question things...like traveling to foreign countries thinking it could be dangerous, scared of flying etc...i never in a million years thought i'd experience something like 9-11 in my life...i figure if something like that could happpen right down the block from me...why not go out and see the world....go skydiving...get a motorcycle....i'd rather kill myself doing something i love, than live in fear and allow someone who hates my freedom & country & beleifs to kill me! (sorry about the rant)

I totally agree with you and I's sorry for your loss. I agree on the commercialionalizations of 9/11 and that it would forshadow the tragedy. I think the reason we should have memorials, murals and so forth is because unfortunately is it human nature to forget and move on. I in no way mean this to hurt or offend anyone but it's the truth. Look at the victims of Hurrican Katrina. If the news and papers and certain directors (Spike Lee among a few) didn't air that these people are still struggling and that bodies still remain and property will be lost we wouldn't rememeber. We and public officials put so much enphasis on moving on and not letting terrorists win that we almost forget or shove it in our mental file cabinet. I don't want sales at stores or people just BBQ for the hell of it. I just think that something should be done> sorry this was so long-

I agree we should have something to comemorate those lost but make it a 'holiday', I don't think that is appropriate.

I totally agree. It would become commercialize, and that would completely missed the point.

Re: NWR: Do you think 9/11 should be a National Holiday?
Audreygirl brought up a good point-- people should not abuse it and forget the meaning behind it but we definitely need to have it-- it, for me, just can't be 'another day at the office' and that is what it feels like since we don't have off for it. As a New Yorker it also makes me upset to go on that day like it's any other day-- it's like the day your good friend or family member died but for so many people so it's very sad. It should be a day and people will probably make it into an excuse to go out and party the night before like idiots but you know what? for me, it will be touching and important.

Yes, I agree with the above post...
Also, if I lost someone that day, or is suffering from long -term effects (like PSD, health issues, etc.) i don't think I would want it in my face every year as a 'holiday'. I think we should continue remembering, but I don't know if we should go as far as a holiday...

Re: NWR: Do you think 9/11 should be a National Holiday?
For New Yorkers, I think this day will always be one of solemnity. So many of us were effected by what happened, and it's still so fresh in our minds, that it's hard to look at it from the perspective of someone living far away from here. For me, I feel like I don't function on 9/11 as I normally do any other day, at least I haven't since it happened, and I'm not sure when I will. I feel like there's this constant overarching sadness to the day, but I wonder if that's only because these tragic events happened in my home where my family was effected by it. I question whether someone who is now 5 years removed from this tragedy feels the same way I do, and if they don't, then I wouldn't want 9/11 to become another 3-day weekend.

I totally agree, you don't want people looking forward to 911 for a day off...The bombing of Pearl Harbor is not a national holiday, I think somber days like these are better off being Days of Rememberence, marked on all calenders.

I agree...however, I don't think the rest of the country has the same feelings as those of us living in NY at the time. It was so much closer to home (literally and figuratively). I live in NC now and people just don't have the same solemn feelings on that day. Personally, I still cry every 9/11....

Re: NWR: Do you think 9/11 should be a National Holiday?
I think that it should be a National Holiday afterall the affects it had on this county and around the word. Like others I don't want it to turn intop just another reason to be off from work/school of for stores to have a sale. However b/c of how recent this tragedy was Idon't think it will at least for years to come. Too many generation have been affected.
