nwr: earth day!

So, tomorrow (Sunday, April 22) is Earth Day. What are you all doing to celebrate and make the earth a healthier place for Earth Day?

with all that's going on these days with global warming, etc, it's SO important that we all take a moment to remember the planet that sustains us, and do a little something to give mother earth a plan.

a few things I am working to do in my life to help the earth:
- I use cloth shopping bags for my errands, and try to avoid using paper or plastic bags (at the grocery store, etc)

- I use cloth napkins and reusable towels instead of paper towels or napkins.

- I am trying to cut down on the number of products that I use to clean - once I use up the stuff I've got, I'm sticking to basic vinegar and baking soda for cleaning most surfaces -you'd be amazed how much you can do with those two things! And it's SO much cheaper!

those are the small things I'm starting with. how about you?

Re: nwr: earth day!

ooh, here is something I just learned.....

everyone knows that detergents have lots of environmentally unfriendly stuff.... I learned from a newsday article that apparently, Tide is missing one of the worst offending chemicals...

so switch to Tide!

What else?

buy marcal toilet paper and papertowels.... they're not only inexpensive, they're also made completely from recycled paper!

what else do I do?

I drive a sexy black prius!

Re: nwr: earth day!

thanks for sharing your tips and for posting this reminder. i want to do something special tomorrow, not sure what though. but i know its the stuff we do on a daily basis that really make a difference. after educationg myself and watching 'Incovenient Truth' and 'Planet Earth,' it really made me want to rededicate myself to making some changes in the products we use. Gotta take care of the Earth!! I think the Inconvenient Truth website has great suggestions and Oprah has done many shows on this and has great suggestions on her website too (she had a great show on friday to celebrate earth day- it was called going green)

Ladies, check out GreenDimes!!!

I think fh and I will sign up tomorrow!

I really would love a prius... I bought my car just before hybrids were really becoming mainstream, when they were still not considered reliable... and now I have to wait until this car has had it before I can get a new one!

who knows what kind of energy-efficient vehicles will be around by the time I'm shopping for one! isn't that a cool thought...

wanna hear the big green rumor?

In about 2009-2010 a new generation of prius will be born.... one that gets 100 mpg! (mine only averages 55mpg)

I totally bought my car wanting to 'reward' one of the only car companies (along with honda) that gives a poop about the environment

You guys are all making me feel guilty. I recycle, and try my best not to waste water, electricity, etc. But not much else beyond that. If the weather is nice, I might work on my garden. Does that count?

of course it does!

the tide and marcal paper products are really easy to do, and doesn't cost any more than usual... and they're available in pretty much all grocery stores...

using compost and mulch and if you're ambitious, even starting a compost heap, also works wonders.... less chemicals, mulch=less water, not to mention many happy flowers and veggies

absolutely! it's all about honoring the earth today

I wish I had a garden to work in... it will have to wait until we're out of apartment-land and can own our own place
