Today was my sons graduation from Junior High..and I had been looking forward to this for what seems like forever. I got up early...made him breakfast..and off we all went to the school. I wanted to take pictures of him w/his friends before the graduation (for memories of course), but he didn't want to. So..the ceremony came and went and afterwards we met him outside to try and take pictures. He took a few..but then seemed to get frustrated with the fact that I wanted to take one with him. So..I just said ok then forget it and walked to the car. While in the car I began to cry...because I felt so hurt. Here I was looking forward to this day and was so proud of him..and I was treated so coldly. My FH had a talk w/him..and he later apologized...and so I thought that would be the end of it. Later on I had to take him to his prom...and all the parents were outside taking pictures of their kids w/their dates. I bought his date a corsage (not sure if spelled that right), and he noticed she already had one. I told him to give it to her anyway (as a nice gesture) and he again caught an attitude with me. At that point I was so upset..I just told him to go. I drove off..but then thought I should go back...so I did. I called him and asked him to come out w/his friends and date so that I could take pictures..and he could give his date her flower and he came out...but without the friends and without the date. He said he didn't want to take pictures and just ran back in. I felt so stupid. Here I am standing there w/my camera watching all of the parents taking pictures of their kids..and having the greatest time..and yet my son...just refused to. I understand that he is a teenager and wanted to be with his friends..but I felt so hurt. I haven't cried like that in a very long time..and can't figure if it has something to do with the fact that he is getting older..or the stress of the wedding. I'm very emotional even typing this (he just got home from prom)...and handed me the camera which he took pictures on..but I can't bring myself to look. UGH! So sorry for the long vent.

As someone who was recently going to proms, and has a sister who just went to prom this year I Can tell you its not you!!! Teenagers at that age can't be bothered with their parents... I even noticed that guys are even more not into the whole picture thing then the girls. I'm sure with the flower and pictures he was just embarassed or shy or whatever and I really wouldn't let it hurt you!!!! He is at an age where what his friends think is very important, please don't be upset abotu this. Its totally normal...

Its definitely the age. Don't take it personal, it's not you, its just nature.

Aww.. That is terribly sad I can only imagine how you feel. You know.. its funny.. I was looking back at a few old journals I used to keep when I was in Jr. High School and there was alot that I wrote about how much my parents were so annoying & how much I just wanted to be with my friends and they never allowed me to do anything, That brought back a ton of memories about how I used to act when I was that age. I used to be so nasty to my parents.. why? I have no idea. Hormones, I guess? I look back now and wonder how I could have acted so cold to my parents. Why was there so much anger built up inside me? Im sure your son is just going through his natural hormonal stage. Jr. High School is a tough bunch of years. I know that FOR SURE!! I really dont have any memories of those years besides how much I tried so hard to 'fit in'. it was tough. Im sure your son will look back in 10 years and wonder where all his prom pics & graduation pics are. I'm sure as he matures, his feelings for you will change. I have a 13 year old sister, and I see myself in her- the way she acts and I totally understand & can relate to her actions. I am so sorry you feel this way. I can only imagine that you are feeling so distant from him right now. Remember.. they are so young at this age that they dont realize how important their 'mom' is to them. One day he will.. I promise.

i also think it is the age - im a teacher and i see such a difference in these kids' attitude and behavior when they are in school and then with mom or dad... i think its puberty, 'coolness', and trying to be independent..
i too didnt realize how important my mom and dad were until i was leaving for college...yep - late right.. but as much as it hurt - you were there and that memory can stay with you.. he will come around and on your wedding day kick him in the butt if he doesnt take thousands of pics..(too bad - the photographer will make him) haha.. sorry - you need a laugh after the tears..

THank you all so much for you input...I really appreciate it..and now know that my son too..suffers from the 'I think I'm cool and my parents are annoying' disease. He'll come around...

Aww first off some cause I know that even though intellectually you know its just a teenager 'thing' emotionally it still hurts.
But just know that its really all just the age, I was so obnoxious as a teenager, I used to make my parents drop me off a few blocks away from school, because I did not want my friends to see me get dropped of my them. But now we are very close.
