nwr: fleas?

umm has anyone's dog ever had fleas?

i am soooooo unbelievable skeeved right now-i was brushing my dog (a mini schnauzer) and i found 3 fleas..i immediately ran to petco, and i got oatmeal flea/tick shampoo, and then the flea med. you squeeze onto their back

i did both of those, and im now washing/vacuuming EVERYTHING

has anyone ever had to do all this? is there anything else i should do?

i think i got them all (there were 6), but i know they lay eggs

Vaccuum EVERYTHING... if there are unhatched fleas anywhere the heat from the vaccuum will bring them out and you will scuck em right up.... but you have to use the flea meds on their neck every month...

has your dog been around other dogs recently?

where have you been with him/her?

just wash ur entire place.

im not sure if my dog had fleas or if it was ground up dog food that got on him..

but i got frontline and bathed him in a special shampoo the vet gave him when he had a rash on his peennnis. lol havent seen anything on him since..

just mop/vacuum ur house and put frontline on him ASAP

Bathe him every day. Get a bomb for the house and spray the carpets and the furniture. Just make sure Jack is out of the house when you do it (duh). And then vacuum. Make sure you clean the vacuum out afterwards because the vacuum won't kill them and they'll lay eggs in the vacuum. Spray the yard too. They sell the bombs at home depot. We sprayed our entire house before we moved in just because the previous owners had a dog and we wanted to be sure the house was flea free. My parent's dog got fleas when we were kids and I remember they were a PAIN to get rid of....

Mini schnauzers have really sensitive skin so just make sure you keep an eye on him. I read that they can be super sensitive to flea bites. I would also call your vet. There is some kind of medication they can give him to take internally that will basically make his blood toxic to fleas.

And then just make sure you use frontline on him. We were using Advantix and our vet told us it was useless because it washes off really easily. I am completelt paranois about fleas so I'm always super super cautious.

Use jasmine oil all over your house. Fleas hate the smell of it or something.

Also, if your afraid of it being on you, a vet friend of mine suggested rinsing your hair with listerine. It kills the suckers.

If you have other pets keep them away from him and put the flea stuff on them as well.

If you have stuff animals, they said heat kills fleas so put them on air fluff in the dryer for like 10 min and it kills them.

Girl that stinks. Fleas are gross. Ick.

Oh and put garlic in his food and wash all of his toys.

buy a flea collar, cut it into pieces and put it in the vacuum so when you **** them up, they die. My sister's vet recommended this.

Good luck. Years ago the family dog got flas bad and it was some fiasco, but you caught it early, and you're on top of it so you should be okay.

I was told it can be bad in large quantities... it's like chocolate. a dog would have to eat a ton of it for it to be really bad for them. (Darwin ate two Reeses Peanut Butter Cups at Halloween and I freaked out and called the vet, he told me Darwin would have had to eat an entire bag of them for them to kill him). If you sprinkle some garlic powder in his food that should be fine, don't feed him entires cloves or anything... I know Jack is smaller than Darwin so ask the vet what he thinks.

The rubber toys should be fine. And yeah carpets are killer... I want to rip mine out just because of the pine needles that are stuck in them and I have no idea how pine needles got up to the second floor!!!!!!

I'm pretty sure fleas don't hang out too long on people so even if one jumps on you it won't stay long.

Can you tell I'm a psycho pet mom??? I did research on EVERYTHING before I brought Darwin home!!!! LOL!!!!!

Get a flea comb and constantly check him and brush him out after bathing him. The more obsessive the better.

i admire your obsession
im not even joking

and im going crazy in my parent's house-because if i was in my own place right now, i could very easily go up to the non-fiction bookcase, and look up information in one of the 15 or so dog/puppy/schnauzer books i own...

i just never thought of fleas before..we've had dogs my whole life, and NEVER had fleas..and never gave them med. for it either

jack will now ALWAYS have flea meds..and ive been brushing him like every 20 minutes since i found them-i havent found anymore since the bath though

i just keep thinking of all the places i bring him..my car..michael's house..my house..my friends apartment idk how fils and my best friend are going to feel about fumigating their house

You can buy sprays in the pet stores to spray on your furniture to make sure all the fleas are dead. Just make sure it doesn't discolor your furniture (it would say on the bottle if it does.)

I've also read that pouring baking soda all over the area kills them

Yup little bits of garlic helps. I would also recommedn washing you dog in ivory soap-for some reason it gets the fleas off right away and vacuum everything, wash all sheets, bedding etc.in hot water & bleach.

Oh man, I feel for you, it totally grossed me out too! This happened to both of my dogs last year. Here is what the vet told me to do. I dropped both of my dogs off at the groomer and had them shaved and flea dipped. While they were doing that we vacuumed eververything and then used those bombs in our house which takes a couple of hours. The bombs are really annoying because you have to make sure you have no open food, or its sealed and you need to wipe down everything when it's done going off but they worked!!! Also, my vet made us put the dogs on Frontline which is pricey but definitely worth it. None of the imitation ones work as good which is how my dogs got them in the first place! The vet told us to make sure the dogs stay away from sand which is how them may have picked them up since we live by the water. We haven't seen a flea since....knock on wood though!

I also started ordering the Frontline on the web for a lot cheaper so FM if you want that info. good luck and I hope this helps!

Re: nwr: fleas?

my mom is worried with my sisters dog that she vacuums no joke 4 times a day, even her hard wood floors.

however, my sisters dog never had fleas just ticks, from running around upstate, NY. she comes home with 50 on her at a time.

my mom even tries to vacuum the dog.

Re: nwr: fleas?

they make a pill you can get from the vet that when the dog takes it, give it 2-3 hours and EVERY flea is dead and falls off. my dog had them so bad one time this was the last resort.

i even got bit a few times on my ankles b/c of how bad she had them. so not fun :(

for my kitties i buy the Advantage stuff through Ebay. i save about $40 only b/c it doesn't come in the box. if you plan on keeping a supply, go through Ebay to buy it.

Yea, my mom's old dog did. We think he actually got them from some dirtbag who used to take care of my grandma. You have to vacume the entire house and use some sort of spray on the carpets too bc they can stay in it.
