Re: NWR: flights
I have always found that purchasing them directly from the airlines website was cheapest. It is usually cheaper to buy them earlier because as the plane fills up the price gets higher but sometimes if you wait you can also get a great deal because they might still have alot of seats available.

Usually the airlines directly is cheaper. You can also use kayak.com and it searches all of the broker sites.

Re: NWR: flights
my exp. is different - i rarely ever go to the airline first. airlines like jetblue and southwest this applies to, but with large carriers and codeshares there's a lot leeway. for example, an alaskan flight may actually be an american codeshare so going to alaska directly will result in a very expensive ticket.
i fly american and their partners and this is usually how their system works. plane tix are usually cheaper on tues or wed - depends on the airline and when they reset their inventory. also, airlines reset their inventory at night so tix are usually cheaper around 2am. worst time to buy tix is in the early evening.
sidestep and itasoftware are good places to do price comparison. but you should know what's a 'good price'. lots of times, it's not worth waiting to save $50 when that opportunity may not come. on itasoftware (use the trial) you can find the book class and then print out that info and give to your travel agent - so they can book the fare for you and you can pay in installments...
if you're not interested in mileage, there are fare buckets that are really cheap that a consolidator or a travel agent will get for you (often times an agent will not offer that b/c their commission is less but if you give them the specific class code they can look it up).
there are other tricks. and they do work. i've flown to biz class on hong kong for less than people pay for coach. but it's a lot of practice and leg work - which may not be worth it for a honeymoon.
