Not a good school district and a high crime area

thanks ladies... I'm job searching and they're the only ones to call me for an interview so far... I thought that was the case, but I was hoping it would be wrong! I really don't want to work somewhere where I won't feel safe...

freeport has a diverse population...the schools have great programs but a parent must be very active in the schools as well as stay on top of their kids...every school has their issues....as a high school teacher myself i understand their are different issues in each school district...i work in a similar type school, but if the students know you care they will love you just as well

the thing is that I work in a similar kind of school now as well, and it's just been... not good, and I'll leave it at that. There are some teachers who function well in that kind of environment and some that don't, and it seems I'm one who doesn't... I was hoping to really find someplace that I could be comfortable in and make a home for myself, you know?

oh well. thanks ladies!

I used to work in Freeport and loved it. I worked in all of the schools at one point or another. I always felt safe.

I grew up and still live in Freeport - The district has changed over the past 10 years ( I graduated from HS in 1998) but so has many districts on LI - I havent heard about any recent criminal acts in the HS lately - I have never felt endangered living in Freeport so I must believe the school district is the same - Their academics, sports and other activites have always been pretty good -

My FSIL lives in freeport and refuses to send her kids there.... I really don't know the details of why bc her neighborhood looks quiet and cute but I guess she has a thing for private schools?

depends on what you think is safe. I know a few kids that lived in freeport they go to private school and i don't hang out with rich people what so ever so that says something.

if you are a teacher that was working in the city schools in the not so great areas (not the mini jail system schools but the not so great schools) its pretty much the same.

I use to hang out there at a bar with some friends until they made it into a salsa club/urban club nights whereas it was a heavy rock/metal bar and basically that was that last time i was there.

I was driving by freeport with FH last night on the meadowbrook and was saying we should one day try to get one of the houses on the water there near the nautical mile but FH said we couldn't send our kids to school there because its a rough dictrict. I don't know anything other than what he said. I didn't grow up on LI, so I wouldn't have known anyone from that area. But thats too bad if it is true because it looks like an awesome town to have a house in!!
