NWR: Girls with MIGRAINES

NWR: Girls with MIGRAINES

I just found out the INTENSE, right side headaches I get are most likely migraines. The doctor gave me Topamax. Wondering if anyone is on this? (side effect is WEIGHT LOSS!!)

Also... the doc told me that what I thought was an insignificant sympton - excessive YAWNING throughout the day - is actually a SIGN of MIGRAINES! WOW!

And when you're going to get a migraine, your body CRAVES chocolate! (the myth is that chocolate CAUSES migraines)

Very interesting.....

although, I feel VERY hyper today. Is that normal? I can't even type right.

I suffer from horrible migraines. I was on topamax and it worked wonders! i was getting at least two a week and the almost stopped completely on topamax. Unfortunately i didnt really see any dramatic weight loss, but I was stlil thrilled it helped my migraines.

actually, my doc said it only will affect the pill's effectiveness if you take over 200 mg.

Did you guys feel hyper? I can't TYPE right for the LIFE of me!

Re: NWR: Girls with MIGRAINES

I haven't been diagnosed with migranes but always thought I had them. My ongoing pattern of symptoms include extremely blurry vision that starts off in both eyes, moves to the left one and tapers off to the left peripheral (sp?). Once the blur is gone, I get an intense headache right after. I wonder if the yawning thing is true b/c I can't even count how many times a day I yawn, and I get a great amount of sleep each night.
I certainly crave chocolate but I don't know if I can blame that on the migrane

Re: NWR: Girls with MIGRAINES

I got migraines all the time in middle and high school due to lack of sleep and not eating right. I was put on pain killers (don't remember the name) that knocked me right out to sleep. I haven't gotten any in a long while (about 9 months - year) and when I do, I just take aleve migraine and stay in bed with the shades drawn and I only drink water b/c chocolate does not help migraines!!

Just be careful if you're on BC - it can screw up your cycle - it did for me when I took the pain killers!

My mom got amnesia from Topamax and had to switch. For real, like couldnt remember her name or anything. She had to wear a medical bracelet w/ her info in case she didnt know where she was.

Re: NWR: Girls with MIGRAINES

I use to get migraines at least 4-5 times a week. Prescriptions and OTC meds helped get rid of the pain but I hated that I was getting migraines so often and had to take pills all the time. My doctor told me that the type of BC pill I was taking was probably increasing the number of migraines I was getting and she tried changing my pill but that didn't work either. So I decided to just stop taking the pill and it was the best thing I ever did. I rarely get a migrain now, maybe every 3 months or so. Only down fall is that I had to find another form of BC, but looking back it's worth.

OMG - I have been on Topamax for about a year- not only does it cause weightloss (30lbs total) it can cause tingling in your hands and feet, and you can have problems with speech, like memory almost. You can go to www.topamax.com But let me tell you that I was getting migraines DAILY - even worse since the wedding planning but since on this drug they have gone down to two maybe 3 a month..... If the tingling gets bad eat a bannana a day, it helps

Re: NWR: Girls with MIGRAINES

I tried a lot of drugs on the market (Vioxx, Topamax). I know just use a drug for onset. No more preventive.

After 3 weeks of using Topamax, I ended up in the hospital for 3 days for what appears to be a sudden asthma attack. I don't have asthma. They don't know why it happened but the neurologist told me he had heard of one similar case.

I have had migraines since I have been 15 year old (following a traumatic acccident). I have been trying to get control over them ever since.

After the hospital stay, I decided to get off the pill (even with the low dosage). After 3 doctors told me I should not be on it.

The following are definite triggers for me.

- lack of sleep or 'regular' schedule
- Not eating at regular scheduled lunches/meals
- caffeine
- alcohol
- sun (must have the shade everywhere with me)
- allergies (can trigger my migraines also)
- if I don't digest some food very well

I have heard of hte following
-wine
-chocolate
-bacon

Re: NWR: Girls with MIGRAINES

Wow... you girls are SO helpful! Thank you!

Kimberly... I can't believe your mom got AMNESIA from Topamax! That's so scary! I just got a little wigged out because I just could NOT figure out the damn bill at lunch right now. NOTHING was making sense and I was just getting really irritated. I called the pharmacist, and he said it may just be the adjustment of just starting them.

I REALLY wish I get that weight loss side effect! I'll let someone ELSE calculate the lunch bill if I can lose 30 lbs!

I will eat the banana each day... thank you!

The yawning thing, by the way, is a fact. And I am just AMAZED at the fact that, for the first time in as long as I can remember, I haven't yawned ONCE today!!!!!! People used to always ask me why I yawned so much... never knew it was because of migraines!

The yawning thing is interesting to me...I yawn a lot and now I may know why!
I was diagnosed with severe migraines in HS..I got the auras and the bad headaches like 3-4 times per week! It was awful. I was on Pamelor and norpramin. The norpramin worked wonders for me!!! I was never on topamax, but that is something to keep in mind with the weight loss side effect!

I never paid attention to the other side effects but I have had them for 17 years now. I take Darvocet!! I SERIOUSLY recommed it!!! It works for me and is allowed during pregnancy.

Re: NWR: Girls with MIGRAINES

I would do a little research on it. I suffer from migraines and my doctor gave me Topomax. It made me a whole different person. i had NO appetitte for days at a time. I had terrible mood swings, I would wake up depressed and become terribly irritable. it actually started to make me feel extremely paranoid at times as well. This is of course, not to say that this will happen to you, but i just wanted to let you know that in addition to loss of appetite, mood swings often occur. Google it, you will find numerous postings with people postings the same feelings, it took about a month for me to notice. i have been going to the chiropractor and found that it helped my migraines.
