NWR: Going to look at a house tonight are there.....UPDATE

Original post by BEANS

any questions I should be asking besides what the taxes are? I am a little bit clueless!

UPDATE: Ok, so we really liked this house alot. It has alot of potential. The entire 1st floor would have to be gutted and re-done, but the finished basement is phenominal. It is 2 bedroom & they are a decent size-you could definetly put 2 kids in the one room. Small yard, but enough room to put a table & bbq and it has a driveway.

How much can I offer below the asking price without looking like an idiot?

Well first of all - I wouldn't make an offer without seeing other houses first. We are in the process of house hunting ourselved and we decided we would see at LEAST 20 houses before making a decision.
I know this may not be possible in Queens, but I still would look at more before making any offers. We were so quick to sign the lease on our apartment we have now, and know that we didn't look around nearly enough and are not happy with it at all. We learned our lesson from that and with a purchase as big and as important as a house, we are not going to make the same mistake again.

As for the offering below the asking price - see what other houses in the area are going for, are they on par? Below? above?
Generally I would say offer what you feel comfortable with... they will usually counter-offer.

This is the 7th or 8th house we have looked at, and pretty much this is the only one in our price range. This is the only one that we could afford to re-do and stay within budget. The others we have looked at were between 650 & 800k and had to be gutted completely. Prices are going down, so if we can't get this one we will keep looking. We really did like it, and we love the area. So we will probably make a decision today about an offer.

Whats the asking price?

560K

I spoke to my Mom's friend ( she's a broker ) and she said it really depends on the conditen and location of the house, She also said that no matter what you offer the people who are selling the house can always bump the price up so try not to offer asking price... HTH sorry i couldn't get more info for you
ETA: Good Luck!!!!!

seriously - do $490. its serious enough of a bid - but gives them room to counter offer and hopefully you will land in the low $500's.

SO EXCITED!!! I AM SO HAPPY YOU LOVE IT!!

We offered $20K below the asking price and ended up paying the asking price...we were afraid we were going to get out bidded....

If you really love the house $20-$30K isn't a lot of money when you get a 30 or 15 year mortgage...it is like $100 difference a month....at that point it doesn't matter....

would you consider LI?? There is a beautiful house for sale by me with a big yard (almost .25 acre) but the taxes are high.....let me know if you need info....

good luck with the offer!!!!

Ohhh.. I know the house prices in Queens are outrageous. Thats why we decided to look out on LI - going east in suffolk county no less, even though we both work in the city...
Good luck!! Let us know how it goes, I always wonder about how much less you can offer too!
