NWR: Hair Dye

NWR: Hair Dye

I think i'm going to get some hair dye and do a dye job this weekend!!! I think maybe a change can be a good thing!!!!!

I am WAY pale and have dirty blonde hair -but i'm thinking of going brown...chestnut....

I wanted to do it for real at a salon but my hair girl said it may not be a good idea because if i don't like it - getting it back to normal may take too long for the wedding...

So - on to the question...any good hair dyes out there? Anyone have any good ideas? Think this is silly??!?!?!?

i just dyed my hair dark brown after 2 years of light brownish-blonde. my best advie is to do it professionally but with someone good!!! i went to my usual salon but my girl was busy so i had some new girl dye it....she messed it up!! she missed some spots, and the tips came out black while the roots were brown!! i was so upset!

you'd have to do a semi-permanent color to do that.
a lot of those colors are hard to get to take, and others take a lot 'better' than you'd like and can take forever to wash out.

this is my advice to you...(i am not a professional i just dye my hair all the damn time)

avoid anything with red in it, red 'stains' your hair and can be a ***** to get out, even with at home bleaching kits. this close to the wedding..you prob want to avoid that.

avoid anything with the word 'Ash' in it. when done at home, a lot of ash tones come out greenish. in order to fix the green tone, it's usually cheaper to end up going to a salon rather than redoing your hair color and having to go darker than you originally wanted.

Nice and Easy is a nice brand to use. I use it all the time, and have never had a problem with them. I am not sure if they have a semi-perm line though.

anything Permanent will NOT wash out in 20 washes. it will fade, but your hair will not go back to it's original color at all without cutting it or dying it again.

semiperm doesnt always take, and does not come in all shades.

if you're serious about doing this, go some place like Sally's Beauty Supply and talk to one of the people who work there. Most of the time they are really knowledgable and will help you pick out the right product.

Good luck, have fun, and take pics.

also... try to remember that it's just hair. anything you do to it that you hate.... you can fix. it might cost more money than you'd like... but it's not worth stressing out over.

Whoa - who loves you like I do???!?!!!!

I think i'm going to go with something like chestnut brown...something along those lines...

So Nice & Easy is not a semi-perm? Are there any good semi perm ones out there?? I don't know of any sally stores near me in Jersey.. I can maybe hit an ulta...are they as good to talk to?

from my experience it totally depends on who you talk to at Ulta. my friend works at one by me, and she knows NOTHING about anything they carry in that store, but she wears a smock like she's a stylist or something and people ask her things all the time, and she answers with wrong info and i smack her later when she asks me if she was right.
ugh.

BUT, talk to them, see what they say. Go with your gut though... if you don't trust them, talk to someone else.

Nice and Easy is a permanent line, most regular stores don't carry semiperm... like walmart, or walgreens or target or whatever... they carry standard permanent hair dye.

i would definitely go to Ulta or try looking in your phone book for beauty supply stores and try one of those.

For referance... manic panic is semiperm (you can't get chestnut brown, but it's a dye that isnt permanent. i used their black to decide if i liked it or not b/c i was going from blonde to black... i loved it, so i picked up nice and easy and did it permanent)

i will try to look for a good brand for you if i can hit up a supply store while i'm out tomorrow. i used to do semi perm all the time, but can't remember who i used.

also, depending on how light your hair is... you can use this stuff that is totally temporary, i cant remember it's name either, but you wash your hair, and before you blow dry it you put this stuff in, (it's a little messy) and then when you blow out your hair... it's the new color. The good and bad thing is though, as soon as it gets wet it comes out. So if you hate it, just wash your hair, but if it rains... EEEEEEK!!!!

Clairol has Natural Instincts and it washes out in 28 shampoos!

Now it's a matter of figuring out which color I like best!!!!

I totally appreciate the help... you have no idea how much!!! I'm not usually one to just 'do something'...but i feel like it may help the way i'm feeling lately..which is pretty poor!!

Here's my advice:

I'm not a professional, but, I have always dyed my own hair (bleached, and color).

Go to Sally Beauty Supply. (There is one in Lindenhurst, I'm not sure where there are others).

Speak to them. They have both permanent and semi-permanent. The semi won't last, the more you wash, the quicker it will come out.

Get a semi-permanent color with a NEUTRAL base. DO NOT get a red base.

I believe you should also get a 40 volume developer, but, let me check with my MOH (she is a colorist).

Don't use the generic supermarket box, it never (in my experience) comes out the color it says it is.

Re: NWR: Hair Dye

Good luck with the dyeing! I’ve died my hair way too many times to count—to the point where I’m not sure what my natural color is. My advice is make sure you have someone help you cover all the hair—like get all the strands in the back.

Re: NWR: Hair Dye

honestly if you are going from blonde to brown you are better off going to a salon at first. Some of the dyes will give you a weird color when you go from blonde to brown-TRUST ME!!! lol

some salons don't charge alot for single process, its highlights that cost alot. I know ppl who have paid $30-40 for single process

again you are going from blonde to brown so dyes that wash out in 2-3 weeks might not be the best idea, you need something a little stronger

some salons use some vegetable based dye that is more healthy

Re: NWR: Hair Dye

As Denise just said. I just colored my hair from blonde to brown and used a vegetable dye. It is much easier on your hair and will fade over time ans washes. My hair has already started to fade. They said you should go back like very 8 weeks for retouching.

My advice is do not mess with your hair if you are not a professional. For $20-$30 more you can go to someone who knows what they are doing.

Good luck

Re: NWR: Hair Dye

I think I may'v misspoke about my hair color....

It's dirty blonde - to me that's brown with blonde highlights in it... VERY hard to describe color wise...

It's KINDA like this - but with more blonde than brown...and by blonde - i mean some natural highlights...

i'm pale as snow and have natural blonde hair...i dyed mine black and loved it... it's all a matter of personal prefferance.

that's why semi perm is a great way to go.

Don't be nervous!! it's just hair, you can always fix it if you don't like it.

Okay - i'm baaaaack :)

I need to THANK you Bemyyoko!!!!! The woman at Sally really knew her stuff!! I told her what I wanted to do and we went over the DEMI-Perm line - this way it will deposit color on TOP of my natural color and not remove & replace... We talked about my tone (pale white girl) and she said that i needed to use a WARM color - so that it wouldn't look harsh... So - i wound up with Loreal Color Gems - Darkest Warm Brown..she thinks it would look very nice!

I felt so confident with this woman that i bought it and i'll do it tomorrow with a member of my BP....a BRUTALLY HONEST friend of mine. She's the perfect person to have in your life - she'll take one look and go - okay if we start shampooing now, you'll be fine in about 2 hours... So i have hopes!!!!!
