NWR: Has anyone adopted a dog from NSAL?

DH and I are stopping by North Shore Animal League next week to adopt a puppy. I'm just curious if anyone has done this before with NSAL and what the process is like?

What kinds of questions do they ask your references?

I did a few years ago, and she's an amazing dog. I believe the 'suggested donation' is about $150 for a puppy, but they have most of their shots already and are fixed too. You need to have two or three people who don't live with you willing to be called and asked about your experience and sincerity with adopting a dog. All in all it was a great experience. Be prepared to want to take them all home with you though, it's sort of a sad place...

HTH

Oh... she did need to be treated for kennel cough when I took her home, but when I took her to my vet he said it's not a big deal that there's only so much that can be done to prevent it in that environment and after the antibiotics, she was perfectly fine.

yes we did like 6 months ago! we love our puppy, you should try calling and asking them when they get a shipment, because thats the best time to go. and try to stay away from the weedends if you can, or go when they first open. they have so many puppies to choose from. however , i do feel sooooooo bad for the older dogs, but we wanted to train a puppy from scratch. in the future we are thinking about adopting a older one. anwyay, the only negative thing about NSAL is their vets suck. they all say something different, and the receptionist is so rude. but if you have your own, its no big deal. the actual process is easy, they call 2 references and make sure you are going to be a mommy and daddy. and your done!!!

I did too about 12 years ago and we had her for six years until she died suddenly. (seems she either ate poison in the park or had a metabolic disease). It was a relatively simple process and they are really concerned about the animals they place. We must have had her about 2 months or so and someone from NSAL came by to see that she was being treated properly. So go ahead and adopt from there they do a good job.

We adopted our dog from NSAL too -- I was young, about 16, so I don't really remember much about the process, sorry!

But I do have to say that I truly believe that adoption is the BEST possible thing you can do, I can't understand the people who shell out to buy a dog when they can rescue one with adoption.

My dog passed away a few years ago, from bone cancer that had spread very quickly, but she had a long and wonderful life with us and was really the best dog that ever lived!

I will probably have another dog one day, when FH & I have a house, and definitely plan on adopting from NSAL again.

We adopted a puppy about 2 years ago. They called 2 references and we had to make a deposit of $200 I think. Since she was only 3 months, she had to go back for shots and to be fixed. It took awhile but she is a great dog and was already paper trained! They saved her from a kill shelter in Tennessee. Here is Honey.

Thanks everyone for all the info -- this is very helpful to us.

Would anyone happen to know if they usually carry any dogs that are under 1 year and house broken
