NWR: has anyone ever broken a lease before?

Just wondering if anyone has been through this in LI. I did this with an apartment in NYC and it was no problem. Now they are giving us a hard time and keep changing the penalty fee...seems shady.
Any advice?

They can't change the penalty fee. It has to go by what was signed for in the LEASE!

It actually depends on your landlord. B/c if it's specified in your lease that if you break it a penalty will be cause of action, and if you don't pay it, it will change, or go up, thats what should happen. But if your landlord is Lenient so to say, they might disregard it

in the lease it says the penalty fee covers the charge of 'preparing the apartment for a new tenant'...no specific number.
The $ they are telling is more than enough to cover this 10x over!

Can assign your lease over to someone else? When I lived in Hoboken, my roommate had to leave early and she found someone else to take it over, not quite a sublease because the lease then went into her name.
