NWR: Has anyone taken the GMAT?

NWR: Has anyone taken the GMAT?

Ok, so I lost my job in November and took the first job that came my way because I needed money! It is a terible thankless job but one thing that has made me realize that I need to go back to school! So, I looked into a masters in human resources at Hofstra and one of the requirements is the GMAT...I come from a liberal arts background and I am so scared of this test!

Does anyone have any pointers or can let me know what preparatory tools you used?

TIA!

FH is in the midst of applying for a MBA program and is also studying for the GMAT. He too has a liberal arts major..
He is taking a Kaplan course. So far like they said.. it got him up 100pts.. but aside from going to the class... he puts in a lot of studying time... the class has helped him with tricks and stuff and gave him the opportunity to bounce questions off to someone(his instructor)..
math & verbal - logic and algebra stuff..

you also may want to see if theyll take the GRE over the GMAT? or some programs at other schools may bypass those exams...

good luck! hth

Re: NWR: Has anyone taken the GMAT?

I just took it...used the regular kaplan book that has a CD and practice tests online....you can also go to MBA.com and if you sign up for the test on there they will send you a CD...

Basically it's like taking the SATs...just math and verbal sections and essays...I thought the verbal was much easier than the SATs and the math was much harder (they have one of those sections w/ A is enough to answer, B is enough to answer, both together are enough, noth together are not enough and I HATED that)

Oh and the way they grade it is whacky and you can't go back to questions but you have to finish all the questions or else you get penalized pretty bad..

I went through the book, never took a complete practive test, didn't answer the last math question (and totally rushed through the last 3 or 4) and was still happy with my score...I honestly don't think you liberal arts will hurt you al all and ithat the test itself isn't anything to be too scared of...

Good luck if you do take it

Re: NWR: Has anyone taken the GMAT?

I took the practice books out of the library along with CDRoms and read and did some practice questions from the book on my commute to work and back home and on weekends I would take the practice exams.
I didn't take a course.
I ended up doing better than I scored on the practice tests and I did very well.
I was intimidated about not being able to go back and change answers which is why I put a lot of time in (my first computerized exam)
And like another comment, I did very well on the verbal and ok on the math.

I took both, the GMAT & the LSAT

I took Kaplan course for both....They are not cheap (few years back it was $1500) but I think they are worth it....They really help and improve your score......Good luck!
