NWR: Health Insurance

NWR: Health Insurance

Next Friday will be my 25th birthday. I am covered under my father's insurance until 26. I plan on switching onto FH's insurance plan by April of next year so I don't have a 6 month lapse of no health insurance. Has anyone done this before? Apparently I have to get bills, loan statement, etc sent to his home to show proof of residency. I'm not sure where to take it from there. I know a quick google search won't hurt, I was just wondering if anyone else had experience with this or if anyone else is planning on doing the same?

The information from your FH's job states you need proof of all that?

Yeah, he was told they need proof that we are living together for 1 year. I figured I would start getting statements from my loans and credit cards send to his house now and just save them for proof. I feel like it's cheating the system, but I feel like people had to have done this before. I have way too many doctors I see monthly to go without it for this long!

Oh ok. I don't know much about it other than the 1 year living together requirement because FH told me about it last year but I opted to stay on my insurance so it would be cheaper for now. I think you gotta do what you gotta do!!

Don't feel like you're cheating the system.I plan on doing that as well. I haven't had insurance in about 5 years and seeing as we plan on trying for a baby as soon as we get married I wanna make sure I'm healthy.

I'd be paying almost 1/4 of my paycheck to get insurance through my job. I don't think I'd feel as bad if we were going to actually be married. Apparently you have to be listed as a domestic partnership under their insurance until you get married with proof of living together for 1 year and you can be put on the insurance. I don't love growing up right now, haha

FH tried to get me onto his insurance because he's a teacher, but his particular district won't do it for 'domestic partnerships.' (It sounds backwards, but I guess it prevents people who are just trying to mooch off the system.) But I think we just had to show a lease agreement.

I'm already on FH's insurance. We didn't have to prove anything to them. All he did was tell his HR people that we live together and are engaged. At first they were going to make us wait until November when open enrollment started again, but they made an exception since we were engaged and living together during this past open enrollment :)

I didn't think you could get your significant other health insurance if you weren't married- you can do that!??!?! FH will be 26 before our wedding and I will end up carrying the health insurance because I don't pay into mine!!!!

Just curious- how are you going about doing this!?

I'm in the process of doing this as well, I'm currently covered under my dad but that only includes medical. I have no dental or prescription coverage and that's starting to become a big problem for me. To get under his I need to show a hint bill or credit card statement, a joint account and prop of residency like a bill of mine going to the house. I'm not 100% on this, and I'll check when I get home, but I thought I had to show my license with the address as well. Every insurance company is different though, I would have your FH call his benefits department and see exactly what it is you need and how many different forms of documentation you need. HTH!

I deal with Health Insurance for a living. Every company has its own policy to add domestic partners onto the employees plan. It sounds like your FH has a similar policy as mine, although you may want to make sure you ask about 'imputed income'. Not sure if your FH pays for his insurance, but they may also tax him on the benefit to add you onto the plan since it changes him from single to Single plus spouse.

Our policy requires proof of the couple living together and sharing finances. So having a couple of your things changed to his address would def suffice. But perhaps you should open a joint savings account and credit card (you dont have to show how much is in it) to show that you are financially interdependent.

I'm also on my FH insurance. Since he works for the FDNY we had to register as domestic partners at the Queens town hall. I believe any city job will allow you to do this.

I don't know if this helps but my fathers insurance covered me till the end of my 26th year, which is this month when I turn 27. When I panicked about this last year when I turned 26 I was still in school and had not started working and they told me they could cover me till now but my dad had to pay a fee.

My FH's company only allows for same sex domestic partnership, which I think is BS!!

Have him ask HR, they have hand outs that tell you EXACTLY what you'll need!

Wow! I never knew that!! That's awesome to know, thanks sooo much!

All of you offered such great advice, I really appreciate it. I really hope I don't need to change my address on my license because I just replaced it with a new one when I lost it two weeks ago

Be-careful with this, this is called Cobra. Cobra can be super super expensive, so I would call the health insurance you currently have and ask how much Cobra would cost. When I was in this situation, cobra would have cost me $600 a month! I ended up getting bare-bones private insurance because it was cheaper! Good luck!!

I changed my license without actually replacing it, this was a little over 2 years ago and I didn't have to pay anything. I was able to do it all online and write the new address on the back. Hopefully I won't have to replace it until it expires and I have to get a new one!
