I don't know if anyone remembers, but I went to the ER in June because I had like 103 fever and it wouldn't go down.....my primary dr was in greece so I had to go to the ER to get checked out (the swine-flu was just just coming out and we wanted to make sure I was okay)......
Go to the ER, at 11:45pm with FH and my dad.....waited for 2 hrs in the waiting room with a mask over my face....finally go in, the Dr tells me, 'it def looks like you have the regular flu, not swine'......fine. They take tests and they give me Mortrin. After waiting for 3 hours, he comes back (4:30am) and tells me it was just a cold, the flu tests came back negative and sends me home....I get a call 6 days later from the hospital telling me, 'how are you feeling, etc.....you had the flu actually the whole time, it wasn't a cold after all!'
Get a bill for $2000 for the visit because they ran 14 flu tests at $140 each test. WHY SHOULD I PAY FOR 14 TESTS THAT CAME BACK INCORRECT?
Do you girls know if I am responsible for it? I just called LIJ and they said they took proper precautions since they actually did test for the flu, although they were all incorrect!!!! Should I argue paying for 14 incorrect tests or just pay for it?

Re: NWR: Healthcare ?
What do you mean incorrect? Did they run the wrong tests?

incorrect as they told me they all came back negative, get a call a few days later stating they were actually positive.

Call LIJ back. Most insurance plans just have a copay for the ER. Whatever tests are done at the ER should be picked up by your insurance.

I would argue it. but then again I live for this kinda sh!t. I wouldnt let them get away with charging u for their repeated screw ups. I would go to the top if needed. but thats just me

Re: NWR: Healthcare ?
My plan works by deductible......the first 2500$ comes out of my HSA account (which I contribute to monthly) after I reach the 2500, insurance is covered at 100% for the rest of the year. I only hit $300 in 2009, so I would basically have to wipe out my entire HSA to pay for it. I have no prob paying for the bed and the visit and ONE test, i just think its unfair to have to pay for 14 FLU TESTS that came back negative when I actually had it.

Unfortunatly I think you are going to have to pay the 2K. I did billing for a hospital for 5 years and not once did I ever have to write off anything because it was the wrong diagnosis. They did run the tests- its just the incompetince of the doctors/nurses that read the results wrong. You can write letters and fight it but I think in the end you will have to pay anyway. Sorry

i'm not from here so i can't give advice about how it works legally BUT i can say that after growing up with two lawyers as parents what i would suggest is ask for copies of EVERYTHING they ran and have someone independent look over it to make sure it is all what they say it is, and if something looks off you will have more to go with.

Re: NWR: Healthcare ?
you should just have to pay the standard $50 or $100 co-pay and maybe a % of the hospital stay if you stayed overnight depending on how/what you insurance covers. call the hospital and call your insurance company!

she said she has to pay the 2500 deductible before co-pays kick in though?

I think she has a diff insurance setup - where you pay less per paycheck and pay into the Health Savings Account. So she has to pay the first $2500 of any procedure/hospital visit and then after that the insurances covers the rest.
Honestly, I think you will have to pay it. That's how your insurance works, so you have to cover the first $2500. If the visit went above that, your insurance should cover. It ***** about the incorrect readings though!
Question: can you roll over your HSA? I know for mine, you have to use it within a year or so or you lose it?

I also did billing and I will tell you now that you're going to have to pay the charges. You always make out better not going to the ER but since you did, and they ran the standard flu tests, the charges are your responsibility. The only fault of LIJ was the incorrect diagnosis. But they ran the proper tests for your symptoms. I'm sorry
