so i noticed alot of people at the gym have heart monitors. my first question is do you think it gives an accurate reading??
Also, i noticed the most popular brand is polar. they are alot of different ones at different prices. i'm not looking for anything fancy & don't want to spend too much money. just one that gives an accurate hear rate.
does anybody have one?? any suggestions??
thanks !!

Re: NWR - Heart Rate Monitors
I have one, and I used it a lot at first, but it is a pain for me to remember it, and I also become obsessed with it while I am working out. I bought the polar brand, and it is a bit technical for me. I am sure if I put the time into it, I would have figured all of the knobs out, but I didn't. It was a black one, and it was 69 or 90 dollars. It seems to be accurate, but it is dissapointing, because the calorie count on the machines are WAY higher than the heart rate monitor. The treadmill always says I burned 100 more than the heart rate monitor does...but I leave it on for a long time, even after working out, and it is good to see how much you actually burn even when cooling down, or doing mundane things around the house. Re: NWR - Heart Rate Monitors
I don't have one but on the treadmill I use at the gym there's one on the handle bars I never understood what it means, I guess I run more for appearance than for cardiovascular health so I don't know much about it, but I really should.

Re: NWR - Heart Rate Monitors
I ordered one by Mio . . .I love using it at the gym, It is pretty consistent if I stand and hold the bars for my heart rate on the treadmill, but its much more convenient. . .I can plug in how many calories I ate in a day and it will calculate how many I burn all day, so I get my net calories
I think it is a little more accurate calorie-wise though. . .it says I burn much less than the machines say I do, because I plugged my resting heart rate in there and it uses that for the calculation - machines just use the average person when calculating your 'calories' burned. It tends to overstate!

Re: NWR - Heart Rate Monitors
I am a spin instructor and I use my heart rate monitor all the time. I have a polar brand monitor and it is much more accurate than the machines at the gym as far as calories burned are concerned. The one I have you plug in your height, weight, age and it calculates your Max and Min heart range as well as your target heart rate range. I use it especially when I am doing interval training. They I think mine was baout 100 dollars but that was a few years back. I bet they are cheaper now. You can get ones that just give you a heart rate reading without all the calculations. Hope that helps!
