NWR-HELP ATKINS DIETERS PAST AND PRESENT...

THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IM DOING THIS. THE FIRST TIME WAS 31/2 YRS AGO AND I LOST 35LBS IN 3 MONTHS. PLEASE NO LECTURING ON SAFE DIETING OKAY HERE'S MY PROBLEM I'VE BEEN DOING IT NOW FOR 3WKS AND CANT SEEM TO LOSE WEIGHT. ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHAT IM DOING WRONG. HELP!! HELP!! HELP!! I EAT 2 EGG WHITES AND 3 PCS OF BACON FOR BREAKFAST WITH A CUP OF TEA(1 EQUAL AND 1/2 & 1/2). I USUALLY HAVE A CUP OF VEGGIES AND A SKIRT STEAK OR CEASAR SALAD FOR LUNCH. FOR DINNER IT VARIES, COULD BE A BAKED CHICKEN BREAST AND MORE VEGGIES OR A STEAK(DEPENDING ON WHAT MY LUNCH WAS)THE OTHER NIGHT I CHEATED A LITTLE AND HAD GRILLED CHICKEN IN A GARLIC, OIL AND WHITE WINE SAUCE. I HAVENT BEEN EATING ANY BREAD. I ONLY DRINK WATER OR SELTZER, BUT FOR DESERT I HAVE BEEN HAVING 1/2 ACUP OF CARB ICECREAM AND SOME SUGAR FREE CARB FREE HERSHEYS SYRUP(THIS HELPS KEEP THE CHEATING DOWN).
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? I FEEL LIKE THE FIRST TIME I ATE SO MUCH MORE AND WAS NEVER REALLY HUNGRY.

Re: NWR-HELP ATKINS DIETERS PAST AND PRESENT...

I did it a few years ago too and lost 50 lbs over the course of a year. Gained most back though when I got back with FH and started eating all those bad snack foods and doing alot of sitting around watching movies and going out to eat (we had broken up for a year right after we both started atkins- we both looked great when we first got back together- lol).

I would try cutting out the ice cream for a while. Its really high in fat. Also- try more egg whites- less bacon...make an omelette with some veggies instead of the bacon. Or try turkey or canadian bacon to cut the fat.

If you feel the need to snack after dinner- have a few almonds- they are high in fat- but its better fat than ice cream, and they are high in protein.

They say its harder to lose weight the second time around. . .and I am struggling with it too.

Has anything changed since the last time you did it? Did you start any new meds or birth control? That could be a culprit when trying to lose weight.

Do you exercise? I lost all the weight the first time by doing a healthier version of atkins (alot of salads, grilled chicken, broccoli, almonds--only occasionally ate bacon and red meats) and exercising alot. I was single at the time so I was going out dancing alot and rollerblading during the day. Now I have joined a gym and try to get there at least 3 times a week.

Good luck!!

The only thing I am thinking is that although you are eating low carb...the things you are eating are high calorie/fat. Maybe try not to eat the bacon in the morning and have more eggs instead? Or not as much steak? Or eliminate the low carb ice cream with syrup?

I know Atkins is really tough...Are you 'officically' following it? It is very strict in the beginning and then gradually you add in other things.

Lastly, are you doing any kind of exercise? When you aren't eating carbs I know it is hard to get the energy to workout.

Not criticising in any way
Just looking at it as I would if it were me.

When I typed my reply, the above post wasn't there yet!! Not to be redundant!

I have been on South beach and for the most part alway try to follow it as much as possible. I would say to try to cut the bacon and add extra egg whites. Is your tea Decaff because I know you have to drink decaff on South beach. I have not been able to lose as much as I did the first time as fast as I did, I think it takes more time . I would definetly recommened excerising if you can even walking.

Ok ill keep my thoughts on atkin to myself, i am against it but to each their own.

YOu def need to incorporate exercise into your routine...you lost weight a while ago but your metabolism was different at the time, plus the constant losing gaining will effect your body so you cant expect to lose weight as quickly as you did last time...If you lost weight before and gained back some of that weight what happened was you lost muscle mass and gained even more fat in your body...And as you probably know fat is harder to burn off, unfortunately losing muscle mass is what happens when you lose, gain and then lose weight again.

Personally to me it sounds like alot of big meals...bacon for breakfast, caesar salad which the dressing is heavy for lunch or steak for lunch and then maybe steak again for dinner...I would maybe find an alternative lunch a little lighter, add a snack to it and also a light dinner.

BUT here is the thing, if you begin to exercise then the fact that you are doing atkins is gonna effect you...My friend ended up in the hospital bc she was doing atkins and working out...Your body burns alot of energy when you work out and you need to replenish that, carbs does it...I mean that is why they give marathon runners pasta before their race.

You will get light headed and not feel well and could lead to worse.

Just be very careful...You dont have to follow any diet, just eat healthy...I mean when it comes down to it, we all know what we should eat and what we shouldn't eat, we don't need someone to write out for us what is healthy or not.

Atkins or no Atkins, if you take in more calories than you are burning, you will not lose weight.

You need to up the exercise and eat a balanced, low calorie diet. (No less than 1,300 calories a day though!!!)

Doing Atkins you should be getting plenty of protein and 'good' carbs from vegetables to sustain you. Its the fat that's going to weigh you down.

Unless you are burning a marathon level number of calories- a big bowl of pasta (especially white pasta) is just going to pack on the pounds.

I agree though, that everyone's body responds differently to different diets. When I did atkins, I felt great and had lots of energy. As I said earlier I was rollerblading 5-7 miles at least 4 times a week and then going out all night. Also, as I said before- I wasn't eating alot of high fat foods--mostly salads and stuff- with the dressing on the side.

yeah there seems to be alot of fat in that diet.

I think when people see they can have certain things they love they will get a little too happy with it and have more than they should and less of the good stuff they should have...Instead of having like a 3oz piece of chicken or steak they'll have a huge piece or more than one and a small amount of vegetables...They do the opposite.

YOu probably did a good balance and knew what to supplement your body with and make up for what you were not getting.

Great ideas. Thanks. I did join Ladies Workout express because I did not want to be standing around waiting for machines but I've had bronchitis and pink eye(yuck) so I havent been in about 3wks. I will def. lose the bacon in the am and as far as the egg whites is there anything atkins wise that I can use to spruce up the taste. Im really not liking them I def. understand what you mean about the icecream but I just feel like if I dont have something sweet I wont make it. I fig. since it was low carb and the syrup was sugar free and no carbs it wouldnt be so bad. The diet says that during induction you should not eat nuts at all. Also just so you guys understand, I am not looking to clog arteries so I am not having steak for lunch and dinner and it's not everyday. That was just some things I may eat. If I am having chicken for lunch or a salad I may have a steak for dinner and vice versa but it's not the same menu everyday either. Some days I may deceide to have eggs for dinner and a salad for lunch. I fully understand also why people dont agree with the atkins diet and that is def. your choice. It just works for me and this will not be a life thing for me either. It's more of a jump start and them Im more looking into the ww way of doing things were I teach my brain to understand portions. I truly appreciate your ideas and opinions though. Thanks

Agreed! My diet allows ONLY 500 calories a day. I don't want to hear it either, I'm under WEEKLY dr. supervision!

Re: NWR-HELP ATKINS DIETERS PAST AND PRESENT...

Are you exercing? I recently cut out a lot of carbs and lost about 30 pounds. I hit a major plateau when I stopped exercising. Your body is probably used to the calorie/fat intake and you need to give it a jump start with exercising.

I would cut out some of the greasey options like bacon and the steak. Try leaner meats like fish, chicken and pork. Limit your cheese to about 2 slices a day and limit your milk intake. You can snack on unsweetened shredded wheat. and air popped pop corn when you are craving a crunch! Try a regular salad with a lowfat or vinegrette dressing on the side.

Watch out bc a lot of low-carb things have a TON of fat and calories.

I know you don't want to hear about safe dieting, but you don't want to risk losing all that weight and then gaining it back.

Also, try something that is not so limiting like WW, you can do the Core and its basically a low/no carb program.

Hmmm if you're gonna cut food out of your diet, i would leave the bacon in for breakfast, bc you're better off eating most of your fattening foods early in the daytime so this way you have more time to burn it off during the day...Alot of people wait until dinner to eat a very big meal but if you eat a big breakfast, a decent lunch, then for dinner you can eat something a little smaller.

That's my biggest issue- I usually have a diet coke for breakfast, or tea or coffee...I just can't eat so early in the morning.

Then I will have a salad or a high fiber, high protein, low carb granola bar for lunch, then dinner comes and I'm famished (especially if its on the days I go to the gym) and I'll just want everything in sight....luckily, there's never any food at the house lol.

I usually make chicken for dinner, I sautee it in an olive oil spray after I season it with salt and pepper (and sometimes cajun seasoning) and some fresh stemed veggies. If I'm feeling bad, I'll sprinkle cheese on my broccoli

When I have an omelette for dinner I use peppers, onions and tomatoes and a little bit of cheese.

My worst habit is the KETCHUP- I'm addicted- especially with eggs (I know- gross). Its pure sugar and I should really cut it out.

Oh well, I feel like I'm being more healthy- except for the piece of baskin robbins prailines and cream bday cake I had the other night

that was a big problem for me too, I rarely ate breakfast but i had to force myself to eat a little something...so although i really cant do a big breakfast, ill have a bigger lunch and have snacks in between...

You should snack regardless and not let too many hours go by without eating anything bc what happens when you do that is your body goes into starvation mode and it will store fat

Have you tried Heinz organic ketchup? It doesn't have any high fructose corn syrup in it.

See I was never a big breakfast person except on the weekends but now I'd rather breakfast then dinner. My other problem is my scale. Mine is garbage and sometimes it's dramatically off like 15lbs. Time for a new one. So I dont know exactly how much I weighed when I started. The other day I happen to weigh myself and see that yeah my scale is way off. I am def listening to all your suggestions though because I am motivated now more than ever to lose because like I said my dress shopping begins in June.
