Ok. So I'm Canadian. til now I was on my student insurance but this month my 90 day probationary period is up at work. this is the plan work offers:
empire blue cross blue shield
need a primary care physician but its a 'no gatekeeper' plan, so referrals to specialists are NOT needed
copay at the primary dr is $30/visit, specialist is $50/visit
my monthly contribution is $98, and in nov. when I can add FH its $192 for both of us
does this sound good? middle of the road? bad? I'm CLUELESS!!!!

Re: NWR: help me with HEALTH INSURANCE
being that you only pay 98$ a month, its great. the specialist copay is the highest out there @ 50$ a visit.
Do you have an in network deductible??
keep in mind that plan probd doesnt cover vision and def not dental.
do you go to the Dr. often?? what are your other options?

i have to ask about deductible
it doesnt cover dental or vision - although it does apparently cover one eye dr visit a year i think?
i'm strange with the dr - soemtimes i have to go ALOT and sometimes not for months, i think so far this year (2010) i've gone once or twice

Re: NWR: help me with HEALTH INSURANCE
While my copay is only 25/35... I pay 130 for me.. and 210 for my FH..... so I think you're paying a decent rate!

i only have a deductible on my prescriptions, it's $100 and than after i pay that it's 10/35/75
100 emergency
35 for all copays (including specialists)....however I believe we just got a letter saying the specialists fees went up to 50, but it wont effect me because I'll be on FH's by then.
no vision or dental either.

Re: NWR: help me with HEALTH INSURANCE
what happens/what's the cost if you go out of network? that's an important factor in choosing insurance.

Re: NWR: help me with HEALTH INSURANCE
I also have Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield at work. My employeer pays in full for us. However our co-pay is high, $45 for primary & specialist. Our prescription plan is $10/35/70.
We where also told that we do not need a referral & that is a load of crap. My parents also have Empire & they have such issues when it comes to referrals. If I was you, I would double check that.

It depends on which Empire plan you have. I have a PPO and I don't need any referrals (except for the chiropractor, when I used to go). But I work in a hospital, and one of our patients needs them for EVERY LITTLE THING.
Certainly, you will always want to check with your insurance company for specifics like referrals, pre-authorizations, etc. Empire is a great insurance company to have and in my experience is almost universally accepted ... I have never had a problem personally and again, I know that with our patients, Empire is the easiest company to deal with.

That sounds good! You're not paying that much a month!
