NWR: Help with a friend (LONG)

NWR: Help with a friend (LONG)

OK, so this is a rather weird situation, so I would like your opinion. One of my friends came over our apartment for lunch a few weeks ago, and she was carrying a box of expensive chocolates because she was going to give it to another friend for his birthday later that day. She didn't want it to melt while she's having lunch at our place, so we put it in the fridge. She forgot and left it at our place, and never called me about it.

So we had brunch a week later, but she didn't remind me about the chocolates and I didn't bring it because by that point I forgot about it. She was upset when she realized I didn't bring it. She was going to see a show right after that second brunch, so I told her, why don't you call me after you're done, and I'll come and bring it over. She never called and I kinda just forgot about it.

All of a sudden she called today and said that since I forgot to bring it to the second lunch, I owe her money for the box of chocolates. The box of chocolates is still sitting in our fridge because I completely forgot it's there. Am I wrong for feeling weird about this? Is this truly my fault? Should I just pay up? It's an expensive brand, so I would be out quite a bit, but I don't know what else to do.

Thank you!!!

I think she is crazy....drop them off to her and forget about it. You don't have to pay, it's her responsibility to remember them, not yours....

She sounds like a lunatic and should get her damn box of chocolates and call it a day. Did she just not give her other friend anything for his birthday? Why should you pay for it?

Tell her the box is still in your fridge, where she left it, and she's welcome to come get it or you could meet her and hand it back to her. The money thing is ridiculous!

i agree, that is crazy. you do not owe her anything, i would just give her the box of chocolates (she, really, should go to you to get them) and forget about it. very strange. ~lacey

That is insanity. It is also her responsibility to pick them up from you.
Tell her, if she wants them, come get them, you're not keeping them from her.
That is all.

You don't owe her any $. She chose to put the chocolates in your refrigerator, and it's not your fault she forgot to take them and didn't remind you to bring them the next time you saw her. Plus, they're still at your place. It's not like you threw them away. I think her request is ridiculous.

I just have to add, this sounds like a Seinfeld episode...your friend is nuts!

I think your not responsible - she forgot and as long as its sealed and in the fridge it won't go bad - i'd drop the box of chocolates off and not pay her. She likely thinks you ate them.

It's not like you ate them!!! I wouldn't pay her the money...it's her responsibility to remember the chocholates, not yours!

What? This is a friend? Give her the box of chocolates back, I would be mortified for her. What nerve!!!

Okay, you are human. You forgot the box of chocolates which is totally normal. She needs to be more understanding if she is a good friend. If it were really that important to her she would have taken the four different opportunities she had to come by your place and pick them up OR called you after her show when you offered to bring them to her. It's not like you ATE the chocolate... it is sitting in your fridge. I would offer, if she presses it, to give the box of chocolate back of course but I would flat out refuse to pay her money for something that she neglected to remember in the first place and then to actually go back and get. If she has already given something else to the birthday boy in it's place then I would suggest she save the chocolate for another occasion or someone else's birthday...it won't go bad. Good luck and I'm sorry that you have people in your life that are this petty about things.

She is over-reacting I would drop them off to her and not think about it again. There are more important thins to worry about than a box of chocolates

Tell the lunatic that you forgot a half eaten bar of snickers and two tootsie rolls at her place a weeks ago, so now you are even, eat the chocolates and lose the psycho...

you should not be paying for them its her own fault for forgetting them. tell her she can come pick them up herself.
